BARRINGTON TO THE BEACH

The contrasts couldn't have been greater. After spending months on the dry and barren Canning Stock Route and Red Centre, we landed in paradise. A place that is seemingly immune to real drought. Rainforests, swamps, river crossings and moss-laden tree trunks - welcome to the Barrington Tops. This slender strip of the Great Divide punches 1500 metres up into the sky, to a place where snow gums thrive and bushrangers hide. Captain Thunderbolt terrorized the gold seekers here back in the 1800s, but the only terror you'll feel now is that in your guts, as you lock into low range and career down the steep hills. You'll be rewarded with crystal clear streams and a family adventure that you'll never forget - all just a few hours up the road from Sydney. But if the weather sounds too cold up in the hills, head south east my friend, to some of the world's largest sand dunes at Stockton Beach. This is Australia's premiere dune driving location - you won't find bigger or meaner dunes anywhere else in Oz. We even spotted a migrating whale off the beach. We also ducked around the corner to Samurai Beach to spot some beached whales of a different kind! This is a gorgeous protected beach, which is home to a whole lot of nude rude dudes. Yep, old dudes who don't like their clothes; quite an education for my kids aged 4 to 8! Samurai Beach is one of a handful of 'clothing optional' beaches in NSW. Unfortunately Jennifer Anniston and Charlize Theron weren't in attendance that day...
Next stop - Tassie's rugged north-west coast. Can't wait! Keep the shiny side up!
Cheers,

Pat
