WILDLIFE - In the surrounding bush and the lowland tropical rainforest of nearby Iron Range National Park you can spot many endemic birds and wildlife such as the Palm Cockatoo, Eclectus Parrot and the sloth-like Spotted Cuscus. You may spot a passing croc, but we are grateful they don’t climb stairs!

CHILI BEACH - White sandy beaches stretch for 7 kms across from Restoration Island, Bligh’s first landing point in 1792.

SPORTS FISHING - Excellent estuarine, beach and reef fishing

ABORIGINAL ART AND CULTURE - Modern Aboriginal Art and traditional Culture at nearby Lockhart River.

GOLD PROSPECTING - Look for gold left over from the days of the old Goldfields.
HISTORY - Portland Roads began as a Port to export gold from Iron Range. Then in WWII was utilised as a Port to supply troops and resources for the Iron Range Air Base. WALKING TRACKS from the Beach Shack visit old Wartime observation bunkers and wind through a variety of flora down to the foreshores.
Portland Roads is now a quiet settlement with some 10 houses with full and part time residents.

GETTING THERE - 800 Kms from Cairns by 4x4, or 2 hours flight from Cairns to the Iron Range Airport at Lockhart River and hire a 4x4 when you get here. The beach has excellent mooring.
