COMMON TYRE SIZES
Submitted: Thursday, Sep 01, 2005 at 11:23
Cruza Ute
I'm currently in the process of purchasing a new 79 Series RV TD Cab-Chassis. I'm considering getting the dealer to fit alternate
tyres
as part of the deal. Standard it is fitted with 265/70R16LT Grandtrek All Terrains on 7" rims.
As I am setting the vehicle up for long distance touring in remote areas I would like a tyre with an All Terain type tread with good puncture resistance that is of a size that is readily available throughout the country.
Is 265/70R16 a very common size or am I better off going up to a 265/75R16.
I intend carrying two spares and a puncture repair kit but if it all turns pear-shaped I don't want to be stuck somewhere waiting for a tyre to come from the nearest capital city.

replied: I would say that 265/75s are more easily found in remote areas and they are also chaper to buy new than 265/70s. I use BFGs and have found that there are more outabck tyre
places
now stocking them whereas this wasn't always the case. If you have two spares you should be ok to get to the nearest major centre. I currently use 275/70s on the GU but will seriously look at changing to 265/75s when it comes to new ones.

replied: You could consider 750 x 16. This is by far the most commonly used tyre in outback areas, and are extremely effective in most going.

Hi Collyn, I dont think this would be an option on the 79 series RV as they run 8inch x 16 GXL rims, too wide for 7.50x16 tyre.

replied: probably the easiest
tyres
to get are 7.5x16 or 235
tyres
but if you can remove a tyre and have some tubes and those large tyre patches for emergencys then that should see you right if things dont go as planned

replied: Cruza,
Go the 265/75.
I've run the 265/75 Goodyear MTRs on mine now for 35,000km without any issues, and they have done a heap of outback stuff, and still 9mm tread left.
I use that size because it fits nicely on the 16x7 rims, come with stronger LT construction, and they are the same diameter as the common 750R16, or the 235/85R16. The latter can be fitted to your 7 inch rims if you had to. Most brands of 265/70 are P (passenger) construction, and have lower load index.
Some of us carry a split rim with 750R16 as a spacesaver extra spare.
the mags which come with the 79series RV look pretty strong, so I'd be inclined to use them. I wouldn't personally drop back to split rims - used them for many years, and happy to see the end of them.
Cheers
Phil
