Automatics and low range descent - transfer cases

Submitted: Monday, Feb 02, 2004 at 17:21

Drew

I have a 100 Series petrol automatic. The car is great and overall I am happy with it. The only thing I would change is low gearing for downhill descent. Since Low Range is engaged at the transfer case, is it theoretically possible for a rock crawler type gearing to be installed for Low Rang Low Gear use only? I am not particular gifted in the mechanical area but thought maytbe someone could enlighten me.

Nope, Does he mean just the 1 gear, or the whole range, cause Marks and Rockhoppers affect the whole of Low Range, not just 1 gear, or am I reading it wrong.

From what I have heared , you can add a second transfer case with lower gears , for your down hill desent , I am looking at the moment for something similar for my auto 80 series . If you change your ratio in your transfer case, you may not like the drive you get when low rance is needed for climbing . If Truckster see's this post he will point you in the right direction. He is the guru when it comes to these mods .Venus Bay

Truckster (Vic) replied:

There are 2 things you can do.

1) Add a second transfer case, which will give you multi ranges
HIGH HIGH
HIGH LOW
LOW HIGH
LOW LOW (you can put Marks or Rockhoppers in the second transfer case, giving you the Ultimate!!!)

2) add Marks or Rockhopper Gears, but this changes the whole of low range, 1st,2nd,Drive in Low range.

1st option
Advantage
You can still cruise along in low range as you do now.
Cheaper than Rockhoppers to buy ($1000 V $1200)

Disadvantage
Depending on your car, you can have viabration issues from the shorter tailshaft.
More expensive than Rockhoppers to install

2nd option
Advantage
Transforms the car, cheaper and I think better option.
Easily reversable if you want.

Disadvantage
You cant cruise along in low range as you do now on general firetrails with a few hills etc which would be annoying.

Food for thought.

I had a reply from Marks. They have a product called a cruisercrawler but it costs $3500 and requires mods to the vehicle height (2 inch lift which is already done) and the fuel tank. Out of my league for this purpose.

Hi Drew
Depends on how much offroad and the type of offroading you are doing. We were away for the weekend and two of the vehicles were autos, both petrol and they handled the tracks around Licola with no problems. The patrol had one advantage that it could use it transmission brake, which sadly toyota does not have. Other friends have fitted rock crawlers and are rapped in them, they just have to change back to high range if they are on fire trails that are fairly flat

I am still waiting on info re the rockhopper. Changing back to high does not bother me. I just want to be able to crawl down slippery steep hills without the sliding going on quite so much.

Hi,
Have a look at this site. You can ask a Transmission question and they'll give you an answer on their site.

This is the link Ask ORTO

And their home page

Hope that helps
