From what I have heared , you can add a second transfer case with lower gears , for your down hill desent , I am looking at the moment for something similar for my auto 80 series . If you change your ratio in your transfer case, you may not like the drive you get when low rance is needed for climbing . If Truckster see's this post he will point you in the right direction. There are 2 things you can do.

1) Add a second transfer case, which will give you multi ranges
HIGH HIGH
HIGH LOW
LOW HIGH
LOW LOW (you can put Marks or Rockhoppers in the second transfer case, giving you the Ultimate!!!)

2) add Marks or Rockhopper Gears, but this changes the whole of low range, 1st,2nd,Drive in Low range.

1st option
Advantage
You can still cruise along in low range as you do now.
Cheaper than Rockhoppers to buy ($1000 V $1200)

Disadvantage
Depending on your car, you can have viabration issues from the shorter tailshaft.
More expensive than Rockhoppers to install

2nd option
Advantage
Transforms the car, cheaper and I think better option.
Easily reversable if you want.

Disadvantage
You cant cruise along in low range as you do now on general firetrails with a few hills etc which would be annoying.

Hi Drew
Depends on how much offroad and the type of offroading you are doing. We were away for the weekend and two of the vehicles were autos, both petrol and they handled the tracks around Licola with no problems. The patrol had one advantage that it could use it transmission brake, which sadly toyota does not have. Other friends have fitted rock crawlers and are rapped in them, they just have to change back to high range if they are on fire trails that are fairly flat

I have the same problem ( condition ) my patrol really gets goig down hill , but luck has one of my club mates has been there done that ! all he done was change the torque converter, works a treat, all up he spent aproximately $660.00. Hope this helps.
