Hi all, Looking for some
feedback please. We are heading for
Cape York shortly and feel that the OTL track will require a more aggressive tyre than my Wrangler Silent Amors. Looked at Bighorn Maxxis at a price of $249.00 fitted etc... Has anyone had a positive experience with them? Will they be OK fitted to split rims or should I also invest in a new set of rims for them and go tubeless? I know there are pros and cons for each set up but looking for some consensus. Thank you in anticipation.

Hi Mike,
The OTL track is mostly sandy and firm. I would think that your Wranglers would be quite OK. Of course, if they are due for replacement then you may choose to go a little more aggressive.
Looking at photos, the Wrangler appear to have a tread almost identical to the Cooper ST's that I have just retired from my Troopy in favour of Bridgestone D697 on a price justification. ($265/$380) The Coopers handled the OTL track just fine. A mud tyre may be better for climbing out of creeks on a wetted bank but the Coopers managed.
Of course the above were all tubeless but much the same should apply to tubed equivalents.
Incidentally, That is a great photo of you at Edith Falls.

Thanks for the reply and info Allan, I'm still looking around and will take on board your comments. As I remember it there was plenty of local smoke about at the time of the photo making for great sunsets as
well as the idylic backdrop. It all combined to make even us look OK...

If conditions are the same as 2010 then AT's will be fine. We had Cooper 265/75/16 ATs on our 100 series and no hassles at all. Sons had STTs and both got stuck at different times. Not us though. But that may be experience also. Been driving off road since 1964 (unofficially more before that). Starckie, OTL and Frenchmans not an issue.
