After recent discussions with my insurer, QBE, I received the following email from their Quality Assurance Specialist.

She said of my previous conversation their telephone advisor, who thought I wasn’t covered, that the advisors only provided general information and that for something as specific as this, I needed to talk to a specialist such as her.

QBE Email - “As per our telephone conversation yesterday in regards to fuel contamination please refer to page 25 of the attached Product Disclosure statement. Fuel Contamination is covered in the event of a claim.
You are not covered as per: a result of using a type of fuel that is not intended for the make and model of your vehicle which is noted on page 25.
As mentioned to you this is not an exclusion we note in our policy for fuel contamination, only that we do not cover if you use the wrong type of fuel for your car - for example: your car only takes ULP and you use Diesel”

Yep Mazcan - Insurance companies are a bit like politicians – they look after their own interests first.
But I have been with one company for about 30 years – never had problem with a claim.
Got boozed on Anzac day and lost a hearing aid – they paid out $3000 on the house policy without a quibble – I thought I was on shaky ground with that claim.

good to know! many items not mentioned one way or another in insurance. some policies don't actually mention wether or not your 4wd is covered off road.

also to Fellow explorers..., if doing a days worth or longer of 4wd and you have say 2 bingles in the day or trip, that's considered (2) separate claims for each event of damage ( happened to me one trip). excess applies to each one, no claim bonus lost and even be warned off for too many claims ( your policy will be reviewed) based on that little trick.

If it not mentioned in the PDS than it is Covered.
Two accidents, two claims, two excesses. Just because they happened on the same day is irrelavant

I slid off the rocks on a beach and my insurance company paid out – QBE stated I was covered anywhere in Australia – it didn’t have to be onroad.

Interesting! I sent an email to QBE last year asking if they cover for contaminated fuel, the following was their email reply,

So I changed to AAMI who stated in an email that they do cover.

Having said that we still have our camper trailer covered by QBE and we are going through a claim with them at present and they have been brilliant. Kevin

Kevin, That's was the point I made a few weeks back, the servo will have a $10 million public liability insurance police to cover exactly that. It really is the responsibility of the servo to make things right. But fortunately some insurance companies cover the damage, I guess they can use it as a marketing advantage but funnily they don't advertise it! Regards Michael.

Dennis, email has been sent to you. Good luck! Kevin

P.S. I sent the same question to a few companies, this was the reply from AAMI, who I went with.

Hi Kevin,

Under our comprehensive policy we are able to cover for your vehicle for damages sustained from contaminated fuel.

If you have any further enquiries please do not hesitate to email us.

Kind Regards,

Yep, I see your point. I believe if you can identify the servo and still go through your insurance they will then follow up with the servo company for compensation and I think you will not have to pay an excess. But it should be just the case of going direct to the servo, just that can be difficult sometimes. Kevin

Kris and Kev,
I just contacted Suncorp which own both AAMI and GIO. Speaking to the consultant about contaminated fuel, she stated in the product discloser that contaminated fuel is not covered. You have to take on the servo yourself.

I then informed the person, about the fact that one of the sister companies covers the damage. The person then went and had a look at their discloser, and came back with the same one as Suncorp.

You are not covered by contaminated fuel. Be it chemical/biological, or some other thing that the person stated.

Make sure you hang onto that email.

Oh yes, I have kept the emails. This was part of my question to AAMI.
I am looking at changing insurance companies for two vehicles. I have obtained an on line quote for our main vehicle;
however after reading your product disclosure statement I need confirm if your comprehensive car insurance covers for ‘dirty fuel’. Example, our vehicle is a Toyota Landcruiser 200 series, V8 diesel, would your insurance cover if contaminated fuel damaged the vehicles injectors? Contaminated unintentionally from an unknown service station. With thanks, Kevin

Hi Kev
Thanks for your QBE email.
My QBE email says the same as your AAMI email
If I can’t extract a signed letter to my satisfaction from QBE, I will search for a company who will issue me a one.
And that might be easier said than done.

Suncorp will cover engine damage due to dirty fuel, had a claim 3 years ago on a grenade patrol, they covered new injector pump and all labour, $5300.00 to be exact, I only had to pay the excess.

Cheers Ross.

Ross,

They may have changed their policy by now. It is the second time I have asked this question.
I may try and contact someone higher up in the decision making area, and ask them the question.

Have just been notified by RACQ insurance today that they are going to cover the cost of fuel pump, injectors and common rail in our Navara after 45 Lt unleaded was put into diesel tank which still had approx 30lt still in it. Only have to pay the excess. Talk about relieved. Wife won't do that again I'm sure!

When I sent RACQ an email asking about contamination fuel coverage this was their reply, Hi Kevin,

Thankyou for your email,

I have called through to our motor claims department about your query and they have advised that each situation is assessed on an individual basis. Unfortunately, it is not a yes or no answer. You could certainly lodge a claim, it would just be up to the assessor to make a decision on the outcome.

I could not take the risk so I did not go with them.
But that is great news for you. Kevin

This fuel contamination issue scares me witless. I know that it will probably never happen to me, but if it does..... As far as I know, NRMA Insurance does not cover contaminated fuel. And then you would have to prove that the ** servo at **** was the source of the contaminated fuel. Not easy

As part of the plan to minimise the risk of filling with wrong fuel type, I have sprayed the inside of my fuel filler area with dayglow orange. From the outside (flap closed), it is perfectly plain - solid white colour. Open the flap and BAM - bright orange hits you. Should serve as a reminded to my wife about filling up with petrol instead of diesel. Unlikely, but since I had the paint and the time, it all cost me nothing but a little effort.

You should always get a tax invoice for fuel and keep the receipt till the next fill up! If you get a fill of bad fuel, you will start having problems a mere few kilometers down the road. Water and rubbish will suck up from the bottom of the tank where the fuel pickup is situated, it happens fairly quickly! Michael

I was in SA last year got some diesel, from a Caltex/safeway,outlet. A couple,of k's down the road,my x5 diesel, started faltering at about 2200 rpms. Went back and lodge a complaint with the panel operator, immediately given a can with label took sample from from same pump, they took one also. Both labelled and countersigned. Told to,get my own analysis done within60 days and get back to them. Put some injector cleaner in and ran th tank out after checking that no water in the sample given. Next fill at BP and all is well. Seems that my x5 doesn't like, discount fuel....just like wife doesn't like discount shoes??? Anway,,seems that some outlets like to cover their backs and take these claims seriously.

Suncorp is the parent company of insurance company GIO. GIO is mainly used as a general insurance company representing Suncorp outside Queensland, offering similar products to the Suncorp branded insurance product in Queensland.

Suncorp also owns the AAMI, Apia, Just Car Insurance, Shannons, InsureMyRide, Vero, Terri Scheer, Bingle, CIL, Asteron and Tyndall insurance brands in Australia, and Vero, Asteron, Guardian Trust, Tyndall, Vero Marine, Vero Liability, AA Insurance, SIS, CMV/AXIOM, Mariner, Comprehensive Travel Insurance and Autosure brands in New Zealand. These assets were acquired with the Promina Group in 2007.

I find it strange that QBE have said they will cover fuel continmation. I have been with them for many many years and after buying the Dmax I insured with them again.

Then I learnt about fuel contamination in diesel and rang them to enquire whether or not they would cover me in the event that it happened. There answer was no they will not cover me.

I rang CIL and was told that they will cover it, so I am thinking about canceling my policy and move over to CIL.
