Cheapest diesel and safe free camp across Nullarbor

We are planning to leave Albany in a couple of days then Esperance for a day or two then maybe free camp 19 or near by if someone has better advice. One of the more popular ones would be good as we are a travelling family and feel safer in numbers , then Eucla to Ceduna then Streaky Bay for a rest for a while. I would like some info on the cheapest diesel on the way across, i get about 500kms out of a tank playing it safe. We got caught with diesel prices like Nanutarra $1.90 drive about 180kms to Minilya $1.65, not happy. It gives you the ......with the big variations in prices along the same road. Thankyou for your time.
Regards
Richard

The best way to find out current prices is to google the stations, then give them a quick ring.

Having said that, from memory, in December Cocklebiddy,Madura, Border Village and Nullabor were the dearest.
Also Penong was cheaper than Ceduna.
There are quite a lot of stops, Baxter usualy has a crowd, but there is heaps of space.
If you have time a side trip up to Koonalda is worth the effort, depends how old the kids are.
If they are young, you will no doubt just want to get over the Nullarbor asap.

It's a few km from the highway, but well worth the diversion for a night stay where you will be alone, at Koonalda Homestead. The road in there is good, and the old homestead is interesting to look around along with all of the old wrecks and petrol bowser, etc.

Hi Richard

Once you get past Mundrabilla and the fenced stations, it is easy to find places to pull off the road. Heavy haulage goes all night, so nice to get a bit further away down an old track. Prior to that, some of the rest areas are large and you can get away from the road and behind trees for quiet and privacy. The Main Roads WA 24 rest areas have a pit toilet provided.

Mundrabilla is usually about the cheapest fuel.

Norseman not too bad, Mundrabilla used to be a cheap fuel spot but no longer. Penong and Ceduna good spots.
Crossed a month back.
Free camps-you dont say if you have a 4wd or not
But there are countless spots to pull over with a 4wd, best either side of the actual Nullabor cliffs and you can cruise down the slope to the coast just about anywhere.
2wd and there still is alot of spots.

In Norseman, there is a store with pumps out the front in town. It is/was cheaper than the roadhouses. Mundrabilla, Eucla and Border Village historically the cheapest, Nullarbor the dearest. My thoughts are know the range of your vehicle and top up as you go. It usually doesn't cost a lot more. Ring ahead and find out what their prices are if you are on a budget and plan around that.

Cheers

Hi Richard,

We will be going across next month, and I would greatly appreciate knowing the diesel prices at various stops along the way - anything from Norseman to Penong would be terrific.

If you don't mind taking a note of the prices and posting them on this thread (or a new one), or dropping me an email at inkglids-at-picknowl-dot-com-dot-au that would be fantastic.

I plan to record the prices and put them on a new thread at the end of our crossing as it is useful info for other fellow travelers.

Cheers,
glids

Hi Richard and Glids, we travelled across and back second half last year. As in previous years, coming from the west, Mundrabilla cheapest by about 12-15c then. (Mind you they run out of diesel on our way over so we had to pay 20c more at Madura) Eucla the same as Mundrabilla, Border Village is dearer. Penong still as cheap as Ceduna. We stopped at several open free camp spots listed in the Camps Australia-6, though the first good one from the west is at Fraser Range, (not the station though if you want to see a station, and pay, it is a popular spot). Yalata West is popular rest area too though no service station at Yalata now.
The Head of the Bight worth a look even without wales, $5 head pension rate.
Great trip over if you want to take your time.

We travelled from East to West along a similar route that you mention back in April and there are plenty of free camps both listed in the Camps 6 book [now Camps 7] and many more unlisted that are excellent. We started looking around 2.00pm each day and were off the road by at least 4.30pm.
As for cheap fuel FORGET IT, those days have just ended and if you are travelling get used to it because it ain't coming back down in the short term.

Hi Glids
This was mid July prices, may have altered.
Norseman- $1.65 BP
Caiguna- $2.09 BP
Cocklebitty _$2.05 BP
Mundrabilla $1.89 Mobile
Eucla- $1.89Caltex
Nullarbor - $2.04 Mobile
Nundroo-$1.62 Liberty
Ceduna-$1.55Shell

As you can see a bit of difference so depending on your range pick the cheapest if possible. We had two stops- Caiguna - only power free showers, which was ok and Nullarbor only power and pay for shower, which was good. Make sure you find the Shell in Ceduna as it is 10cents cheaper than others.
