Tried to book event after members decided voters to go to Inverell, NSW for 60 couples late March/early April for week. Sent e-mail to Inverell tourism rejected, send e-mail to Inverell Council rejected from our organisations GMail account. Wonder why they bother putting up their websites with contact details if they are disinterested in tourism and events. Went with our second choice who received our e-mail and replied. They have been most helpful in wanting to assist in organising the event.

Did you try calling them on the phone?
I know it's a quaint and old fashioned technique, that is, actually talking to someone but I have found it oft works.

IT gremlins can cause havoc, even in Council systems

Sent an email from my Gmail account to council@inverell.nsw.gov.au and tourism@inverell.nsw.gov.au with NO PROBLEMS at all.

My thoughts are that they couldn't understand what the hell you were talking about, I tried too, but I couldn't.

Two points ...

1. I also found the OP to be hard to comprehend. Inverell have plenty of voters of their own, no need to import any!
2. My partner is there tonight and tomorrow for her work, so they are not closed!

I live in that region and I can assure Andrew that local Councils and Tourism Associations in Inverell and neighbouring towns will do backflips (with pike) to boost visits from the travelling public.
Also in the region, there are also more FREE o/night rest stops per 100km. than probably anywhere else in the country.

Hi Andrew

Are you saying that the venues were not able to accommodate a group of sixty couples? What type of accommodation were you seeking - caravan sites, campsites or motel type accommodation. With plenty of each in Inverell, they may be able to accommodate the group spread across a variety of venues, and you could ask about use of the showground or aly other sporting club venues for some daytime get together activities.

From the way I read it Andrew D tried to email the Tourist Office and the council chambers and the email bounced back from them. He didn't bother to call them on the phone so he took his business elsewhere. Guess the 60 people who voted to go to Inverell will be disappointed.
My guess is that he typed the email address incorrectly.

He's actually posted some very useful stuff. Not surprised he hasn't revisited this topic given the unnecessary bollocking he got.

I suggest that is the members here who have taken the trouble and time to post useful stuff for Andrew to try and answer an ambiguous question Bazooka.

Andrew, how about coming back and clarifying your post?

Otherwise you have cast an unqualified and possibly unfair slur on a town which usually welcomes visitors.

Perhaps you could even come back and offer the courtesy of a thank you to the posters who have attempted to help you.

I think you misread my post Mother. I was responding to the comment that he's a troll. Clearly he's not as he's made some decent contributions recently. Sure his comment could be considered rather precipitous, even galling to locals, but a few of the responses are in the 'go for the jugular' style which is all too common on here at times.

Andrew was obviously frustrated but as a poster pointed out one phone call may have done the trick. For those who aren't aware, there are all sorts of issues with email and organisations deal with them in a variety of ways, so even if they make it through gateways and filters you can't be guaranteed a timely response.

Thanks Bazooka; fair enough. I was not aware of his other contributions and took the posts at face value

"BTW this is Andrew D. 's one and only post on ExplorOz so I'm suspecting a troll."

and

"and seems to have disappeared"

I don't know if we can see that here, but on another forum I am familiar with, we can see all of a member's posts, and when he was last logged in, so comments such as the above a stated as a fact.

Yes, I understand that sometimes emails can let us down, and in fact when surveying Shires to collect informational data for my own website, some reply, some don't. I don't know if it is because they did not receive my email, perhaps screened by their spam screening because it was sent to multiple addresses, chose not to reply to me, or if their reply failed to reach me. I know that latter has occurred on more than one occasion after the people concerned have persisted and found another way to contact me (eg by asking their visitor centre to contact me through their email address outside of the Shire's). Their emails to me were bounced every time, yet I was receiving replies from councils. It appeared that the bounce was occurring within the Shires own IT system, not my address being bounced by my ISP.

Lyn replied to Andrew reporting no problems communicating with both the council and the visitor centre using a gmail address.

Strange that Inverell Council walked away from supporting Opera In The Paddock which was a very popular event attracting alot of visitors.

Walcha has put its hand up for it and apparently sees a great opportunity for increased tourism.

Maybe Andrew D is right?

BTW no affiliation with the above or interest in opera.

bazooka, you say he's posted some useful stuff, but I cannot find him in the members list, and his name doesn't appear in a search of posts, so what is one to conclude?
Slagging off Inverell is all very well, but a single post and nothing more heard seems suspiciously like a troll to me.

Peter T9, perhaps they saw a conflict with another event date? Or, as reported, Opera walked away from holding next year's event because they couldn't see any way to carry the shortfall in ticket sales (of around $30000, as reported) - so it seems not to have been Inverell that walked away.

Bazooka,

I simply did a Search by Screen Name/Alias and this is the one and only posting by Andrew D. (with a "." after the D) With the absence of any followup I speculated that he may be a troll.

Hi Lyn

A search on name here only brings up posts started by a member, unlike other forums I use where you can see all posts by a member.

Hi Bazooka

In the absence of any follow up or clarification from Andrew D. perhaps you could show links to other posts that you are aware of.

Maybe Andrew posted in anger on the spur of the moment and now regrets it. As he has not come back, the thread has certainly wandered off topic.

Hmm. I'm ever so slightly offended (lol) that I apparently now have to justify my comment.

BUT, in the interests of expanding a few readers' knowledge of a useful search technique try entering this in Google (you can simply click the link to see the results of course):

andrew d. site:exploroz.com

If you want a more precise search put inverted commas around your search topic eg "andrew d." If you don't want to learn about or use Google operators simply go to (Google) Advanced Search to refine your search.

Thanks Bazooka

Searching sites through Google is a method I use on forums with a good search for text, but I have not used it to stalk members LOL - I mean I had not used it with a member name.

You come over as having a lot of attitude - especially with the title.
The fact that you are not going, sound's like Inverell's gain and your loss.
