Hi Bill

The 3 litre turbo diesel Patrol GU II - pre October 2001 was the most suspect and the one some nicknamed as the 'hand grenade'. A few reported failures with later versions. Ours is February 2002 and has given us no problems, including being used to tow a heavy caravan all over Tasmania.

Mother hen,you have to be the luckiest Nissan owner on the planet!!
Your model is right in the middle of the problem area, so I can only assume you only travel short distances at a time and mostly downhill. My son,s 2003 model was only towing a camper trailer and really not flogged at all and it terminated. I have the 4.2T ,2000 model, and am pleased that I didn't follow his advice and " upgrade" when he got his.
Keep saying those Hail Mary,s.
Cheers

Hi Bill

There are many series III still out there with original motors. Probably quite a few of the notorious series II as well.

Your son was unlucky, but I do know there have been a few failures reported in these 'improved' models, and probably more than is acceptable for a top brand.

I know the 4.2 litre keeps on going, but it is not available in auto and it is a slug compared to the zippy 3 litre motor.

We put on EGT and Boost gauges, and did not make any other modifications such as adding a chip, so as not to stress the motor when towing a heavy load.

Ours is now a family car not the tow vehicle as our caravan is overweight for its specifications (it is auto), which meant we could not load up and go long term touring and stay legal. Now approaching 200,000 kilometres it has had no mechanical problems at all. A great vehicle and has proved far more economical maintenance wise than our Landcruisers.

You're probably thinking of the the early to mid 2000's 3.0 litre turbo - had the ZD30 motor - less affectionately known as the "hand grenade" by impacted owners. The problems with this were well documented in many 4wd forums, although there were many who claimed they never had any issues with this.

For peace of mind, as long as it hasn't got the pre 2010 ZD30 motor - you'll be fine.

2008 model will have the 3.0 Common Rail Diesel. The problem motor was the 3.0 Direct Injection. I think changed over to common rail around 2006-2007.

Sorry my mistake, was 2.5 common rail. We had a fleet of these, that had timing chain/guide issues & one that had big end caps come loose. All were well serviced & most were fixed under warranty.

I've personally owned two D22's with the 2.5 CRD (still have one in the driveway today) & have never had any issues.

I've been towing a trailer full to the point of GCM around town with one since 2010 - no issues.

My previous Ute of another brand crapped 3 trans doing the same work.

Most engine problems with the ZD30 where caused my the EGR fouling the MAF. The MAF then send the wrong signals to the computer leading to overboosting. Keep that maf clean and their should not be any problems.
