Hi,

I read about these cyclist attempt to cross the deserts from Alice to Eighty Mile Beach some time ago.

Their Website

Seems they got into a bit of difficult on the Kidson.

They said the waterholes they relied on were dry (or not operational).
Their portable water pumps failed.

They came across dirty water but choose not to drink it and got a water drop by aircraft.

Seems a bit odd though that only one of them was listed as missing and rejoined his companions later, something doesn't quite add up. Their twitter feed on their page doesn't say much either.

Anyway - better to be above ground than below, and goes to show that even when you think you may be prepared - the Aussie bush is quite harsh and unforgiving.

Thats an expensive few litres of water if the quote in a recent thread (simpson desert rescue) of $50,000 to get that aeroplane up is right.

As you said Alan, better to be above ground than below.

Pity they didn't do their research Al. A quick look at trek notes and places on this site would tell you that none of the bores like razor blade and the Borstal are working. This sort of chaos is what makes it harder for the rest of us. I can only wonder if they had their permits in place as they probably would have been advised as to the scarcity of water by the T/O's.

Very careless, dangerous, expensive to the taxpayer and upsetting. Bloody idiots.

Bit more info on the water drop.

Cost estimated at nearly $250,000 and police suggesting insurance policies or similar could be taken out.
