Well, about this time last year I was scrambling to try and make a trip out to the Simmo, short-cutting the thing in time and money.
See old thread here..
It didn't happen then, but with the fullness of time we're now doing it late in August. He never found out about the failed plan, and still doesn't know about this one.
I've upgraded the truck to a very
well kitted out GU8, rallied three other trucks and a group of guys and we head off on the 27th August, returning to
Brisbane on the 9th of September.
We plan to cover much ground in 'getting west' then amble around the desert for the best part of a week before finishing up at the
Birdsville Races then
home again.
I'd be keen to hear commentary on our planned route and timing, along with anything I really should make sure we see and do - or should avoid!
Thanks, look forward to your ideas,
Scott

You 'lost' Sat 6/9 ??!! :)
Maybe you plan 2 night BV, and there's plenty to see around there for a lazy day.
Perhaps a detour to Haddons Corner on the way out if you haven't been there already ?
Not on your map page, but just a thought.
Dig Tree is fine for camping, but Cullyamulla
Waterhole is my favorite spot on the Cooper.
I personally wouldn't
camp Dalhousie, just have a swim.
Lack of a comfort fire there just doesn't appeal to me.
Would head to Purnie either way for that.
We did West East in April, camped first night Rig Rd an hour or so past WAA line, then along WAA, Rig again after Lone Gum detour, then one on one last night on QAA.

Haha, we'll be at the Races Fri/Sat, heading out Sun. May as
well call it lost up front though :)
We hadn't planned to
camp at Dig Tree, we were only stopping there in order to push through to
Innamincka.
We'll just swim at Dallhousie there, we'd prefer a fire too.
Where is Cullyamulla
Waterhole?

Cullyamulla is on the road into Inna form
the Dig Tree, only 15 mins short of Inna, and say 15 mins off the road to the Cooper there.
It's on the Desert Parks pass maps, so I'd be getting those soonest, post date your start date when ordering, but you can use the maps etc to plan the trip easily.

Briscott,
The only trouble with leaving
Birdsville after the races and heading for
Brisbane is that there is a constant stream of traffic and you eat thick dust the whole time on the dirt roads.

getting to
Birdsville either on the Friday or the Saturday you will find that camping spots are few and far between. Unless you are prepared to
camp down by the river or out of town a bit. What I am trying to say is be prepared to
camp self sufficiently away from the town if you arrive late, the caravan park usually fills by Thursday arvo
It shoud be a good trip anyway just don't stress about accommodation and be prepared for a bloody lot of traffic leaving Sunday/Monday

We're booked into tent city so hope accom isn't a drama. Do you know if it's better to leave Sun or Mon? Or via
Innamincka?

We stayed a while but Monday is the better day to leave as most people are trying t get
home ASAP and tend to leave Sunday.
It also depends on your return date is it flexible? if so take the extra trip to
innamincka and have a good look around the area
