Is the "darling river run" suitable for a blacktop <span class="highlight">caravan</span>?

G'day all, just thinking if the "
darling river run" is suitable for a blacktop
caravan - not knowing what to expect, all replies greatly appreciated, thanks, norm

Hi Norm,
You will be fine as long as it's dry and no rain which will stop an off road van anyway, good gravel road on the East side we haven't done the West side.
And great
free camping.

The
Darling River by name 'starts' up near
Brewarrina....there are a few rivers/creeks/tributaries before that going back up into Qld that form the start of the
Darling River.
The 'end' of the
Darling River is
Wentworth were it meets the
Murray River.
The run down from
Menindee is easy if you 'drive' to the conditions & could easily be done by an 'on road' van....I would suggest you only consider it in dry weather.
From Pooncarrie going south you have blacktop all the way.
Spend a day or two around
Menindee Lakes... stunning scenery!!!

I have just come back from a trip from Bree,
Bourke,
Louth,
Tilpa and
Wilcannia.
Well, May and part of June! I had to come
home before I did the trip to
Wentworth.
The roads were dry, important, and mostly smooth gravel or clay.
All the campsites were
well looked after, no rubbish and access to the river was easy. Not a lot of water but sufficient for fishing.
My van is a blacktop Windsor but only 4.4m. Dust is always a problem as it depends on how
well you have sealed everything. I had old beer boxes over the door vent and the bottom of the fridge vents. Didn't stop all the dust but I think it made an impact.
There were no problems getting in to all sites and the stations along the way were very welcoming. Support them and don't worry about the cost as they provide additional experiences apart from the ones you can access yourself.

Totally agree with supporting the station people, you will get more for your dollar than staying elsewhere.
Check outthe Outback beds website for some of them through out outback NSW and just into QLD. Cheers Toni

We did that run in May last year heading south - north. Our van is a 17'6" Empire which at that stage had standard "black-top"
suspension and tyres. The road was mostly very good. We used the western track until
Tilpa (a beaut
camp on other side of river) after which we used the east track up through
Louth. The van has seen much worse roads than this one! I guess it all depends on how recent rain and or a
grader has been through. There were a few semis using it when we were there but they hadn't chopped it up much at all.
