F250 7.3 L Engine shutdown.. help!

If it's not a fuel filter I hope you have deep pockets if it's to do with injectors or pump keep your fingers crossed it's something minor.

Sounds to me like the "crank angle sensor" has failed. The starting for 10 seconds and then stopping is a tell tale sign. Every f truck should have a crank angle sensor in their glove box (just in case). It is located at the front of the motor just near the harmonic balancer pulley (not all that hard to change over if you can get one). The other thing that you can check, if you can find someone with an f truck, they may have a chip decoder and you can plug this into your coder plug, which is located under the dash, above your left leg. This will give you the code and you can maybe clear the problem.

On an off chance try disconnecting the batteries for 10-15 mins to reset the computer

the only problem we had with the F trucks was one had a camshaft position
sensor failure ,it caused it to cut out at times ,but you need a diagnostic tool
to check the system .

Sounds very much like the timing sensor . Had the same problem. It cuts out the system totally . There was a ford recall on them early on . The original was a black coloured sensor , the replacement is grey .Fairly simple to change as long as you have 10mm socket. Cost of sensor is about $75.

While not knowing the exact symptoms, a number of F250 owners have had the Cam Position Sensor fail. We purchased and carry a spare but have not needed it. I hope your problem is simple and you are back on the road soon.

Thank you all for your replies,they are greatly appreciated .We are going to do the diagnostic check tomorrow with our micro tuner and hopefully it will be nothing to serious.We will keep you informed.

My father had simular problems with his. Problem started as intermittent, It would drive fine not towing. Put a trailer on it, it would keep cutting out. He took it to Ford about 5 to 6 times & $3500 later problem still kept happening. They replaced crank sensor, injector harnesses, injector pressure switch & fuel pumps. Ford through there hands in the air & said it may cost approx 10 grand to get to the bottom of it as it is a process of elimination. So in the end Dad brought the Car down to Canberra to me as he could afford 10 grand more to fix it. I put my scanner on it & found it was leaning out before shut off. Pulled tank out & checked the fuel lines. Lines from tank to engine were clear. Checked fuel tank sender unit & found blockage. Dismantled fuel sender unit & found 2 flute filters in top of sender housing blocked with black grim like sand. Cleaned out flutes & refitted all ok now. Runs better than it has for last 50,000 ks so who knows how long its been blocking up for as it has had a slight hestitation for a couple of years which ford said was normal. Runs smooth as now. Checked with Ford parts & the micro cat doesn't even list the flute filters. Called 3 other ford dealers they had No idea they had the filters.

G'day Sue n Shaun, was wondering where you two were at in your travels... Can't really be much help with the F truck problem, so won't go there. Just wanted to say hi, we ran into you both at a rest area down the road from locks well, you said we should call in there, what a spot.. Soon as I saw it, I thought gotta throw a line in there, by the time we walked down the 300 odd steeps, that gutter that looked like it was 20m off the beach, was like 200m out.. And the waves that looked 4ft high turned out to be about 4m high... Was quite funny.. Stunning spot.. Thought we may have past you on our way back across the nullabour , we were heading east. Guess there were a lot of F trucks around, but did see a bike on this one, tried the UHF , no reply... Hope you sort out your vehicle problems, and your both well. Was great meeting you both...
