Forumites,
Interestingly there are several cars in this category that does not have dedicated child restraint hooks/anchors fitted for the third row seats.
The Territory salesman pointed this out in 'upselling' his product, that they indeed have anchors for the third row. And upon further investigation, neither Pathfinder, CX9, Outlander nor Xtrail have third row seat anchors.

Given that the car will be used as a mums taxi and we prefer one of those cars that does not have an anchor; Is there aftermarket anchor that can be fitted, has anyone done this?
Cheers,
CJ

Pretty confident the wife's subaru tribeca has a couple. I recall fitting a booster seat to the back row a couple of times.
Bit sad that these things aren't a bit more standardised.

That might be because modern parents sometimes leave their children in the car, and when they are right up the back they can easily be forgotten. Harder to get to as well.

So in the interest of child care, the rear position may not be seen as the best overall care for children requiring such restraint systems.

CJ,
Not sure what state you are in, in QLD aftermarket points can be fitted, it will require a an inspection and blueplat.

"If your vehicle does not have an anchor point fitted as standard you will need to have one installed before a child restraint can be used. However due to their design, some vehicles will require more than just an anchor point. In such cases a range of engineered and approved child restraint solutions are available. A Department of Transport and Main Roads Approved Person will be able to offer professional advice about the type of specialised anchorage equipment required for your particular application, and assist with its installation. Fees are likely to apply.

Visit the Department of Transport and Main Roads website or phone 13 23 80 for more information.
"

I am sure all states will have the same facility.

Yes. NSW the same. We have to fill out and send form to RTA/RMS details of what, who, when, where, why, and how it was fitted. Also, we generally fit the seat as well. Not just anyone is licenced for it.

It's not practical to have small children that need restraints in the very back row. As a parent I would not like to be stretching through the back doors to buckle a child in the very back.
My sister-in-law has 5 kids in an eight seater van. The three that need restraints are in the middle row. The older two go in the very back and two parents in the front.

My advice is. Even if you have a vehicle with restraints in the back. Save your spine and don't put child seats in the very back.

Thanks guys for the informative replies.
As to the comments on the wisdom of putting kids in the back - it is not the everyday option (why would it be ;-) but it is most certainly the only option on day trips when elderly parents will occupy the second row. That is the eventuality that need to be planned for.

Pretty much precisely why we also have a 7 seater and wanted rear restraint options. The back seat is the perfect place for kids because the back row is also always the smallest. But what would we know?

I can only confirm that there is no 3rd row seat anchors in my 2012 CX9. It is easy to get to the 3rd row though, as the 2nd row is easily moved, the whole base seat slides forward so you can actually step in. You can do it with one hand.
