Looking at getting a hand winch while i save up for a bull bar/electric winch. deciding between a high lift jack with winch kit (I have read alot about these and used one before) or a hand winch, anyone used a wyeth scott hand winch? looking at a 3 ton rated one.

Personally I like the old come-along. Can't beat them.

Whatever you buy, I strongly suggest that you buy it from a reputable outlet. OR check it very carefully for authenticity.
A lot of cheaper outlets (ebay sellers & the like) do not provide any "in-country" warranty. Nor do they sell items that are AU STD complient. In addition, the majority of them are just "sellers", they have no idea about the product they sell..

As an example, there is currently an ebay seller I know of selling 1.2t capacity hoists with a mounting system that is only a 1t rated capacity. Clearly this does not meet AU STD's & clearly the seller either has no idea or doesn't care.

Used one (different brand) but same thing in 2.5t rating - its still hanging in the "not-used-anymore " section of the shed along with normal hand winch and the high lift.
It used to twist cable and wound it up and sloop in the system only meant about a genuine 1m pull - syn rope version might help though.

In right circumstances any of the above can just work but all are hard to implement sucessfully when your really in it and conditions are not ideal.

Ultimately you will end up with electric low mount and at $400 for some these days its the only way to go, so I would direct your effort in that direction.

I have a Patrol and your don't need a Bullbar to mount winch in these and with brackets the cost of an implemented low mount winch can be only $500 and a couple of weekends stuffing around.

The cost of some of the other things will slow you down so if I had to choose from your options I'd go Hi-lift for its occasionally useful work as a jack (unless where talking sand).

The more power pullers will do the business, however I'd take a tirfor styled winch for a couple of reasons. First, the cable is separate on a tirfor so they are (slightly) lighter to move around. Second, they crawl along the cable so there isn't any need to reset. The spool on the puller is small so it needs resetting. Last, the puller due to its nature is quite prone to putting on a few loose wraps then burying and jamming the cable which is unpreferred.
Finally, the tirfor style winch has a better mechanical advantage per throw, and if you've ever spent some time on the wrong end of either, this is a fairly major point. The tirfor can be used single line pull and turned through a snatch block if required. The more power requires a snatch block to get to it's rated capacity.

Save your money both are a waste of it you can get by with out either, next time you see some one with a hight lift jack ask them if they have ever used it ? same with hand winches.Better to find a mate with electric winch,I have being to most places and rarely needed either.

Wow, well there you go. Necessity is the mother of all invention but they were obviously just stuffing about on the days winches and wallaby jacks were invented. I'm on my third hi lift - must have killed them by watching them on the wall of the garage?
Forget looking after yourself and being responsible, turn yourself into a human parasite and leech off your mates - sage advice there.
If you stick to the formed roads, you'll also get by without a 4wd.

I carry a hand winch and a high lift jack.

I've used them both for me and others.

They're coming with me in two weeks to the Gulf and back. I hope I don't need them but they can save my backside if I do need them.

Thanks to all for the feedback. Ended up goin for a more power puller with 35 foot rope. Wouldve had to buy extra kit for the high lift and cant use it as a jack on my car without a wheel lift hook kit. Yet to test out the winch but its definitely solid, hopefully I'll never have to use it.
