Hello, we are looking at beach camping around beachport area SA. We are taking a week off over Melbourne cup arriving the Friday before. We have camped on Fraser Is before, is there the same sort of set up where there are designated zones along the beach on a first come first served basis. Will have a patrol and hilux with camper trailers. any areas or advice appreciated. thanks.

I think you would be best contacting national parks regarding camping on the beach & the parks . There are some great 4x4 tracks around beach port hope you have fun .

Call into the Beachport tourist info place when you hit town and there are 4wd maps put out by the local clubs that are very helpfull.. You can camp in designated areas from Robe all the way down the coast through Beachport and into the National Parks to the south/east. Beware the sand is very soft on some of the beaches. I've driven on a lot of beaches all over the place and it had me really paying attention. It's a lovely place to visit.

thanks, have done a bit of beach driving but never with a camper on the back, so should make it interesting. we are really looking forward to spending the week there. do you think we should be able to fill the week in there?

There's Three Mile Bend about 3ks north form Beachport, it's in Beachport Cons Pk.
Nice sheltered, shady sites in there, fills fast so get there early.

Other great places to camp in there are in Little Dip CP, Old Man Lake, Long Gully, close to Robe The Gums and Stony Rise . . . or just in the dunes anywhere after Five Mile Point, look for those large open areas, and park away from the general route through the dunes.

To be honest, I prefer Canunda Nat Pk, between Carpenter Rocks and Southend, much quieter.
Geltwood Beach camp is a fair size.

Some good reading on this Parks flyer . . .

thankyou. we aren't a fan of crowds so maybe around carpenter rocks might be a better option. how did you find the sand driving whilst you were there? we know to lower the pressures right down and have a set of max trax between us. you wouldn't have any pictures of the camp sites you have stayed at? have tried googling some images but have had little success. thanks again.

Looked at that cup weekend, it's only for Vic, so crowds won't generally be as bad as a local long weekend . . . also being in the area for a week, it'll be a tad busy on the weekend nearer Beachport - Robe, but maybe do the weekend up through Canunda, then head up to BP and do the drive to Robe week days.

See a few TR's done for both trips, some pics there too.

Beachport - Robe Dec 2011
Beachport - Robe New Years 2013
Canunda Aust Day weekend 2012

You'll see some of the maps for Beachport - Robe there, and a link for Canunda maps / notes here . . .
Canunda map

Camps, not many pics of these, but Geltwood Beach is good base for trailers, can get in there from decent roads to the north, and you could base trailers there and do the lower half back to camp, then move on with trailers to Southend, and then 20 mins to Beachport on the blacktop (good cara parks there with facs if desired, or on to Three Mile Bend camp), or camp Nal-a-wort or Kotgee camps just shy of Southend.

Pretty sure then you'll see a few vehicles Beachport - Robe, but not too many :)

Beaches and driving.
Should be fine, run 15psi all round, trailers too.
Geltwood Beach is about 5km long, you can detour around it when it is too soft, has a bit of a rep at winter sometimes (possibly moreso with trailers too) but generally I have had no issues with it, and Nov the beaches are pretty firm and good down the SE.

Only other beaches you may want to try without trailers are up in Little Dip CP, these are Erringtons and next along Little Dip beaches.
VERY soft most of the year, and don't leave the top tracks, stay as high as you can.
These are angled beaches, and they can suck you down to torwards the water.
If you camped at Old Man Lake or Little Dip campsites, you could secure you trailers, drive down the track on the east boundary of the park to Erringtons, along that over the point, along and exit Little Dip far end, then up the track to pick up trailers again and continue through the dunes track.

Always drive on the ebbing tide, and not within say a couple of hours of high tide, or at all on an incoming if there's weather blowing onto the beaches.

I strongly recommend using a sand flag, one saved me from a head on once.
Should really be mandatory in there.

Overall, you will find the coastline stunning, a real gem piece of coast.
The dunes and beaches are awesome fun to drive.

If you like fishing, take a rod, often Mulloway or Salmon about, as well as Whiting, Flathead, etc.

Shane there are far fewer camping opportunities along the Limestone Coast than you'd find on Fraser Island. What formal camps are available are mostly small & tucked in the back dunes, not along the beach. Melbourne cup is a busy time with tonnes of Vics coming over so it's difficult to recommend one camp over another except to say find somewhere central for a base camp & do day runs without the campers in tow. The sand here is far far more difficult than anything on Fraser with over 1/2 the beaches unsuitable for towing. There are often inland detour tracks but even these are very tight & can be hard to pass oncoming traffic. Another option is camping in the bushland sites at the Southend caravan park. Cheap & secluded it's a top spot where a site can be locked in.
Download the Wattle Rangers 4x4 maps as a guide.
Might see you over there. Look for the 25 FJ Cruisers.
