Don't know much about the stretch between
Melbourne and
Wilson's Prom, but East of Wilsons Prom there's camping near Woodside on the SW end of the Ninety Mile Beach. A bit further on between Seaspray and Golden Beach there are 20 free council-run camps behind the dunes. Heaps of camping around the Gippsland Lakes which I haven't explored. From Orbosy you can go to
Marlo, mouth of the Snowy R and access Cape Conran NP then drive the Old Coast Road to Bemm River, Cann River, Tamboon,
Point Hicks and Wingan Inlet. Back to the highway to
Mallacoota if you like caravan city but its a fishermans paradise from all accounts.
Back on the highway again,
Genoa has a nice overnight
free camp. South of Eden is Saltwater Creek in the Ben Boyd NP. Keep going up the coast to
Hobart Beach campgroound in Bournda NP south of Thathra, then Gillards Beach in Mimosa Rocks NP north of
Tathra.
Between Gillards Beach and the big game fishing town of Bermagui is Mimosa Winery where they do a very fine lunch and dinner but
check the days they're on.
Going north towards
Narooma there's a great little winery, Tilba Wines, off the Princes Hwy just south of
Narooma. If you enjoy a long lunch there they may let you
camp on the flats near the lake on their property. Then its
Mystery Bay just south of
Narooma, as mentioned by
John and Val.
Keep going north towards Moruya and have a look at the NP
campground at Congo (turn off just before Moruya). There's also a council-run
campground at Moruya Heads near the airport (light planes only and not busy, so don't worry about aircraft noise!)
Back on the Highway going north to
Batemans Bay you'll pass through touristy Mogo. I don't find the shops attractive, but my other half does. But Mogo Zoo is
well worth a look. It specialises in endangered species, both native and exotic. (White Lion, Snow Leopard spring to mind)
I don't like
Batemans Bay much - too developed and touristy for my liking, but any number of CPs if you need to laundry and resupply. Just north of
Batemans Bay it's
well worth investigating Depot Beach,
Pebbly beach and
Pretty Beach, all in the Murramarang NP.
And of course, if you go inland off the highway on this journey you will be in the
Vic High Country and the NSW coastal ranges and Snowies with endless camping and touring opportunities.
All the
places I have mentioned are suitable for your rig.
So much to choose from.
Enjoy!
Cheers
