We are heading from Adelaide via the great Ocean Rd continuing along the southern coast via the Queenscliff ferry to Mornington Peninsula, Wilson's Promontory, then up over the border a bit maybe as far as Bateman's Bay before heading back to SA, maybe along the river. Leaving in just less than 2 weeks, for 10 days. Any recommendations for must see's or must stay's? We have a Prado and Kimberly Kamper so are self sufficient, wanting to free camp as much as possible. Thanks in Advance

Very nice around Wye River, good little pub there too.
Not sure about free camping nearby, but there is a good cara pk there too.
Good having both these there, as the town is hardly a blip, but a very pretty spot.

Otway Fly is a good visit, as are Triplet Falls just down the road (do the loop walk to the falls).
There are TI centres both ends and during the GOR drive, call into them, they have HEAPS of great info and are most helpful.
There are waterfall drives if that's your thing.

Near Koroit there is Tower Hill Reserve (just off the main hwy), well work stopping a look for a quiet drive / walk / animals, and nearby Mickey Bourkes Koroit Hotel is awesome for a feed, place is like a museum. (We stayed overnight, huge stately rooms and appointments.)

Missus and I did a drive back from Melb to home (Adelaide) last year, 3 days, needed more time, 6 or so would have been nice.

Have fun.

Thx Les. I had a couple of those places on the itinerary (Tower Hill was one I just added) and triplet falls and the walk. Will definitely check out Wye River - might not plan to prepare lunch that day and go for the pub instead!
We have done the Great Ocean Road a couple of times but fairly quickly so want to take a bit more time this time - no kids in tow now! Will check out the TI centres as well.
It's the other side of Melbourne that I have never visited.
Hoping the beautiful weather holds up!

Would be good if you can take this weeks weather over to the east :)
They are copping it at the moment.

Hi Carolyn,

WE did the GOR a few years ago and wrote a couple of blogs about it - have a look here - might give you some ideas, though if you only have 10 days for the trip you will be pushed for time.

Not so familiar with the area east of Melbourne, but there is a lighhouse at Point Hicks and then Mallacoota both of which are nice places. If you get as far as the NSW south coast there is plenty to see around Eden - whale museum, national Parks, Tilba is crafty and touristy but a walk up Mt Dromedarry is worth the effort. There is a good bush campsite near Tilba at Mystery Bay.

Have a great trip.

Cheers,

Val

Don't know much about the stretch between Melbourne and Wilson's Prom, but East of Wilsons Prom there's camping near Woodside on the SW end of the Ninety Mile Beach. A bit further on between Seaspray and Golden Beach there are 20 free council-run camps behind the dunes. Heaps of camping around the Gippsland Lakes which I haven't explored. From Orbosy you can go to Marlo, mouth of the Snowy R and access Cape Conran NP then drive the Old Coast Road to Bemm River, Cann River, Tamboon, Point Hicks and Wingan Inlet. Back to the highway to Mallacoota if you like caravan city but its a fishermans paradise from all accounts.

Back on the highway again, Genoa has a nice overnight free camp. South of Eden is Saltwater Creek in the Ben Boyd NP. Keep going up the coast to Hobart Beach campgroound in Bournda NP south of Thathra, then Gillards Beach in Mimosa Rocks NP north of Tathra.

Between Gillards Beach and the big game fishing town of Bermagui is Mimosa Winery where they do a very fine lunch and dinner but check the days they're on.

Going north towards Narooma there's a great little winery, Tilba Wines, off the Princes Hwy just south of Narooma. If you enjoy a long lunch there they may let you camp on the flats near the lake on their property. Then its Mystery Bay just south of Narooma, as mentioned by John and Val.

Keep going north towards Moruya and have a look at the NP campground at Congo (turn off just before Moruya). There's also a council-run campground at Moruya Heads near the airport (light planes only and not busy, so don't worry about aircraft noise!)

Back on the Highway going north to Batemans Bay you'll pass through touristy Mogo. I don't find the shops attractive, but my other half does. But Mogo Zoo is well worth a look. It specialises in endangered species, both native and exotic. (White Lion, Snow Leopard spring to mind)

I don't like Batemans Bay much - too developed and touristy for my liking, but any number of CPs if you need to laundry and resupply. Just north of Batemans Bay it's well worth investigating Depot Beach, Pebbly beach and Pretty Beach, all in the Murramarang NP.

And of course, if you go inland off the highway on this journey you will be in the Vic High Country and the NSW coastal ranges and Snowies with endless camping and touring opportunities.

All the places I have mentioned are suitable for your rig.

So much to choose from.

Enjoy!

Cheers

The above should be a reply not a followup. Sorry about that.

But I will add - A few km southeast of Mallacoota there is a beaut little NP campground in a bush setting tucked away behind the beach. Can't remember its name but it's worth a look.

Frank P posted a nice summary of free camps. However, once in NSW, most of the far South coast is National Park, and far from free. There are overnight fees (sorry, I cannot remember how much), but they aren't cheap for what is on offer. Mind you, that section of the coast is magnificent for its scenery.

Thanks everyone. Been busy the last couple of days working to earn the holiday we're about to take!!

I really appreciate your feedback - nothing like asking the experts. Will have to try and get organised this time to do a blog myself maybe!

You've given us lots of ideas to choose from!

Thanks again
Carolyn
