Hi All,

I would like your advice on the following:

We (2 people) are driving from adelaide in a 4WD, to Roxby Downs (camp one night), then drive to Marree, (camp another night), from here 'this is the bit where we need your feedback on' we are thinking to drive to Level Post Bay to see the lake.

Now, we hear that Level Post Bay is a fairly easy drive, however we dont have experience driving 4WD, and our car is auto.
We have experience driving other cars.

Do you think we can take on this? If so what are some of your recommendations?

We are looking to do this, in the next 5 days.

thank you
Josh

It's just a normal dirt road that is quite easy except for the corrugations that were there last time I drove it. Of course, if it rains then all bets are off.

Personally, I'd get to Marree via Leigh Creek if coming from the south. A few good spots to camp along that route. I'd avoid camping at both Roxby and Marree unless you have a specific reason to stay in either location.

Be aware that the Borefield Road (120km) from Roxby to the Oodnadatta Track is a bit rough - and will close at a drop of rain. The Oodnadatta Track is in good condition at the moment.

Sorry, can't comment on the condition of the road from Marree to Level Post Bay. Can't imagine it would be any worse than the Borefield Rd. Shouldn't pose any issue to a 4WD and an auto will make no difference.

Recommendations? - Good set of tyres and spare for those roads.

Josh Hi,
As above the roads You intend to use are all pretty good dry weather roads and without rain shouldn't have any problems.
There isn't any camping at the lake but Muloorina about half way there from Marree has excellent camping.
Muloorina is a station and have used a bore to create an oasis in very harsh country & well worth the $10.00 camp fees.
I would stay there rather than Marree.
Mike.

Agree with Mike re Muloorina campground. Top spot, though was bloody cold when we were there in June, 2011. Honesty Box for payment, and clean toilets away from the waterhole. Heaps of room and shade. Only another 40-odd kms to Level Post Bay from there.

Rather than heading in to Level Post Bay maybe consider driving north up the Oodnadatta track to the lookout there, on the map it will look like it is further but time wise it would be similar. The view of the lake will be better up there and you also get to experience some of the Oodnadatta and the old Gahn line as a bonus
Check out Farina ruins just south of Marree as well

Agree with a couple of other comment, and camp Farina Station camping & old township ruins, great spot with some history to check out . . . when we camped there April en route Simmo, it was like a bowling green down by the creek camps :)
Give your self a good couple of hours day light for the town ruins.

Yes the Muloorina LP Bay Tk is generally open to the homestead / camping area, but any damaging rainfall see the LPB Tk closed straight up.
Some info on local stations here . . .
Muloorina Station info
Ask at Marree Servic Station about if it's open if stopping, otherwise I think there's a PAR / road conditions sign just out of Marree advising.

If you are travelling up the Ood Tk a little (???) then don't miss the sculptures out there, 2 areas, can kill an hour here easy wandering around . . . Coward Springs for great camping just up the track 100km or so, (small aertesian pool, great toilets, donkey HW showers, walks) . . . set up and head up the road another ~ 30km to see Wabma Kadarbu Mound Springs CP is up the road a bit, allow an hour there easy.

Josh - Be aware there have been heavy thunderstorms in the Lake Eyre region overnight and into today.
Marree has recorded 15mm and Arkaroola has recorded 28mm up until 9:00AM this morning.
Check local road conditions before you go, on this site ...

Cheers, Ron.
