setting up <span class="highlight">solar</span> panel to agm battery

Ive read heaps of information on this topic. I have bought a 148ah agm maintenance free deep cycle battery and dual 60w solar panels with an mppt regulator. My query is exacu how do I hook it all together?? Can I just place my solar panel alligator clips on the terminals as well as alligator clips that run through a fuse to a 3 point 12v plug to run my fridge and lights off?? Appreciative of any input!!

Yes, just make sure you attach the red alligator clip to the positive terminal.

A more permanent setup up would be prettier but what you are suggesting would work.

just use the method of soldering to get the terminal permanently joined if you find it suitable and before going for it wiring with right terminal is the most essential one.

Your battery positive terminal should connect through a fuse (rated at say 20 amps) to the positive side of your mppt controller (= red clip). The fuse should be close to the battery and the mppt controller should be at the battery end of the cable running to the panels, not at the panel end of that cable.

Not sure what you mean by a 3 point plug to connect the fridge, but DO NOT use the sort of 3 point plug you connect to your power points at home. You need a socket to suit your fridge, or better an Anderson connector. This should be fed via a fuse (again 20 amps is suitable) from the positive battery terminal.

All negative connections should be made directly to the battery negative terminal.

Hi 789,

Here is a drawing of a 12 volt solar setup. This is a typical setup and applies to any lead acid battery setup.

As John said, place the regulator as close to the battery as is feasible to minimize voltage drop.

Use 6mm cable from the panels to the regulator and from the reg to the battery.
