Rooftop tent recommendations/experiences?

I an't talk about the Serenity Campers Rooftop Tent but with your indulgence I will tell you about ours.

We have the 1.6 meter wide Hannibal tourer tent with full annex. It's mounted to the rear of the 100 series so that when we open it and use the annex we can also use the rear of the car as a "kitchen" with the tailgate as the kitchen bench/table. The tent itself opens up to a 1.6 x 2.4 bed with enough room for us plus a couple of the grandkids. The annex is also large enough to sleep one or two others on a stretcher on the floor of the annex. We take a fold up ensuite with a portable toilet when facilities aren't available.

The only issue I have with roof top tents is that you can't set up camp and go for a drive. It has a habit of "coming along". When this happens to us we set up a cheap tent and leave it where we are so that the camp is still occupied and "set up" when we come back. Been no issues as yet. However if you are going to use your trailer this is not an issue.

We had an Aussie Traveller RTT for a number of years on our LC100 and found it great. It has plenty of room 'downstairs' if the weather turns bad to sit, cook and eat. We only sold it when because of age and joint issues we found the up and down aspect becoming an issue, especially in the middle of the night. The ladder is solid and good to climb. The cover is big enough so that all your bedding and the ladder can stay there when you fold it up. Many are too tight and it makes the convenience far less if you can't leave everything there.

Make sure you see one unpacked and put away. Several of the cheaper ones we saw were not easy to do despite the sales people saying they were.

We had the smaller tent part but there is a bigger 'downstairs' version which may be good with kids.

We had ours mounted so that it came out to the passenger side and had a separate awning across the back so we could have cover over the back whilst preparing meals etc. Ours had a zip flap so you could access through the rear side door from inside which was useful in bad weather.

There are many options so check them out carefully before buying. My feeling is that some of the cheapies have very light grade canvas and zips and may not stand up to robust use with children.
