The whole alternator isnt the sort of item that shoukd wear out after 7 years. It may be the brushes inside which need replacing which should be a couple of dollars.

What makes you think you need a whole new alternator?

I did read your previous post about the water too.

$300 from Nationwide Auto Parts, for VDJ79. They look like they're on eBay. No affiliation etc

Don't know about a V8 Toyota but a D4D Hilux alternator cost me 900 bucks in Broome a couple of years ago . The Broome Toyota joint didn't have any , RACV Total Care sent me to ARB . What can ya but pay the price . I asked a couple of Auto Lec's about fixing the old one when I got home , both said they just replace em .

Have you been through mud and water recently, if so could be just the brushes are stuck?

Does the alternator have a clutch pulley, there seems to have been a rash of alternator failures lately caused by the pulley failing, if this is the case then replacing the pulley is a cheap fix.

Most auto electricians these days aren't interested in repairing or getting an alternator reconditioned these days, easier for them to just replace it with a new one, I would pull it down myself, determine the cause of failure and if and if an economical repair, repair it and keep as a spare.

Cheers

I totally agree. About 90% of all alternators replaced could be fixed very easily if anyone bothered to try and save the planet.

Most are only interested in the easy dollar and providing NO service to customers.

The problem with repairing alternators is that it's often uneconomic to repair them, because of the combination of parts and labour costs - particularly if you have to pay a technician to do so.

By the time you buy a new set of bearings, buy a combined voltage regulator and brushes, machine the slip rings, check and replace any faulty diodes, and paid the labour to disassemble and re-assemble the whole shebang - you've gone past the cost of a new alternator.

The aftermarket alternators on eBay are made in China, and are cheap because they use Chinese bearings and Chinese voltage regulators, that are not the same design as the genuine article.
They have different connector plugs to the genuine article to avoid penalties for infringing patent and "registered design" rights.
As a result you nearly always have to modify connector plugs for aftermarket alternators.

You can buy genuine Bosch and it will cost you more than an aftermarket one, but less than the genuine Toyota alternator.
