How does one wire up daylight running lights legally?
I have a pair of small ones and also would like to know about placement as the only place I can install them is on the radiator grill each side with about 450 mm between them.
They are only 8 led's each.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

If they are only DRLs and form no other function, they should be wired to come on automatically when the ignition/engine comes on and switch off when headlights are turned on.

Correct. Just the same as fog lights. On with parkers and off with headlights.

DRLs do not come on with parkers. They come on with ignition/and or engine start.

Yeah Shaker. They are supposed to be off if the headlights are on. But who bothers about minor points like that. Not many.

Garry. I think of it that way because it's easy. Off with the headlights. Not perfect but it's easy to remember.

Quote "Correct. Just the same as fog lights. On with parkers and off with headlights."

All fog lights must have a separate switch to switch them off. The quote below is from the Australian Road Rules, all states have now incorporated this particular clause into their own road rules.

Not only are they illegal to use at the wrong time they are annoying because of their poor control of their light spread. They are only used at the wrong time by posers, that's why they are referred to as wanker lights.

NSW Legislation is

Road Transport (Veh Registration) Regulation.

Division 4 Daytime running lights

94 Daytime running lights

(1) A pair of daytime running lights may be fitted to a motor vehicle.
(2) A pair of daytime running lights fitted to a vehicle with 4 or more wheels must be fitted with the centre of each light:
(a) at least 600 millimetres from the centre of the other light, and
(b) not over 510 millimetres from the nearer side of the vehicle.
(3) However, a pair of daytime running lights fitted to a motor vehicle under 1300 millimetres wide may be fitted with the centre of each light not under 400 millimetres from the centre of the other light.

Location of daytime running lights on a vehicle

(4) When on, a daytime running light must:
(a) show a white or yellow light visible from the front of the vehicle, and
(b) not use over 25 watts power.
Note. The third edition ADRs only allow white daytime running lights.
(5) Daytime running lights must be wired so they are off when a headlight, except a headlight being used as a flashing signal, is on.
(6) For subclause (3), the width of a vehicle is measured disregarding any anti-skid device mounted on wheels, central tyre inflation systems, lights, mirrors, reflectors, signalling devices and tyre pressure gauges.

Hahaha
Yes as do I. Headlights. How boring. But effective.

DRL's are the equivalent of the old fog lights....wanker lights.

But if used correctly they will not blind you like fog lamps do at night at DRLs switch off when headlights come on.

The beauty of correctly set up DRLs is you do not have to worry about them - there is no need to switch them on or off - they do it all themselves.

Many OEM fits have them as dual function - during the day they are DRLs and at full brilliance but when you switch the parkers or lights on they then cut brilliance and became the parkers.

My headlights are wired into the ignition. Easy.
I do have a giggle, when people tell me that my headlights are on when I am idling ….. but if a globe blows, they tell me there is a blown globe ….not that the head lights are on. :-)

Well my VW has DRL.s and I wouldnt be without them. Wakes up all the w**kers who dont use their rear view mirrors.
Nine are LED and the headlights are always on auto so I dont worry about them.

Far better to be seen then not.

Canada for one country has a rule that sidelights are on permanently.

Perfectly sensible.

And as for w**ker lights they and their owner should be put off the road.

DRLS must as said above be fitted close to the edges of the vehicle NOT grouped in the centre or above the bonnet line.
