Comment: Fowlers Bay <span class="highlight">Caravan</span> Park

Hi Karl

We are never fussed when we go to Fowlers Bay, and prefer to go the dirt road. Its a great drive, the roads are usually in good condition and it gets you off of the busy Eyre Highway.

That's my thoughts anyway.

Gooday Karl, we came across Fowlers Bay earlier this year came in from the highway on the dirt and left on the dirt/tarmac found both roads interesting and as we do not tow we found the road OK. Whilst staying at Fowlers Bay which we found to be excellent there were a couple of guests at the Park who complained that the dirt had dislodged a few items in their respective vans. but they also acknowledged that they probably did not have those things as secure as they should have been. Will certainly go back to Fowlers Bay just to experience the area without the wind.

Two years ago we were coming back across the Nullabor and decided to go into Fowlers Bay, mainly just as a look see detour off the highway.

Went in from the Nundroo end, a most pleasant drive and of much interest to me is the evidence of the ancient geological coast formations.
Arrived at FB to find that several whales were in the bay and a whale watch party was about to depart.

"Why not" said Chris, and next she had paid some money and we were off with 4 other visitors. Scheduled for about 1 1/2 hours we were soon having closeups with these magnificent creatures, the Southern Right whale.

The boat skipper knew all the whales, calves and "bachelor boys" by sight and name.
Being a gusty day with rain squalls the skipper hoped we might see something very interesting and cruising 75m or so from 3 whales a sudden squall came through. As if on cue, the whales faced into the wind and broached out of the water with mouths wide open, obviously taking in the fresh rain water!

Well, the tour was scheduled for around 1/12 hours but it was well over 3 hours when we arrived back at the jetty, fairly exhausted by the boat movement but what a treat.

Too late to get back on the road we stayed in the van park which was very reasonable cost wise, a little corroded mainly due to salt air but a most enjoyable stop over.

Wife n I stopped over Easter at Fowlers Bay, on our way home from wa. Have always had a bit of a chuckle to myself about the road in.. We followed the hema, we saw the first turn off, nearly did a U ie, but the gps said to keep going along the hwy, and turned right onto some little like farm track, which wasn't to bad, after letting a bit of air out, for a smoother ride, it took us past, I think it was an old school ruins, the track was ok, but a bit rough. We eventually came out onto a decent dirt road which led us to FB.
During our stay (4 nights) several people asked us which way we came in, and how the road was, the talk around the park was that the east (black top and gravel) road was totally shocking, badly corrugated, rough as guts! We had even considered going out the west route. But quite a few thought the way we came in sounded much better.. When we packed up and hit the road (about 4am) we headed out the east route.. I and my wife couldn't believe the amount of fuss that was made about the road condition, camp trailer in tow, it was a great drive out, little be of corrugation, we had actually aired up the night before we left, and it was fine.. I just think how many might have gone out the way we came in, they would have turned around I recon. But I guess it just goes to show, some peoples thinking is way different to others.
We had a great time in FB, the Saturday night cook up was fantastic, I remember I got extra calamari, one of the lads who was serving dinner, was from wa, though he could only see the top ring on my beer can in the stubby holder, "hey you haven't got a spare emu export, have ya mate" think maybe he was a bit home sick.. Great people.. Great place... Of course I gave him one.. How do ya think I got extra calamari .. Cheers Odog
