Just bought HJ60 factory turbo.... Any tips?

Hi everyone, I have lots of questions... Just today I picked up my new beast, an 86 model HJ60 with 12H-T engine, and five speed... It has done 350k, the tyres are crappy Federal H/T which will be gone this time next week upgrading to a better A/T tyre in either 32 or 33 inch... And am still deciding who to give my money to re the saggy
suspension... Any advice on tyres that anyone has used to good effect on same type of wagon and
suspension shops in
Sydney will be greatly appreciated... But to my main points.... At around 100kmh it has this kind of vibration that comes and goes in a pattern type. I will be driving at 100kmh and a vibration seems to come (not seemingly from front tyres, feels more like just behind the front wheels... gearbox?...:(...) and stays for about 3 seconds and then goes away for about 5 seconds and it just repeats all the while I am at that speed and disappears at about 80-90... Any ideas??
Also can anyone recommend to me a Toyota turbo diesel guru in
Sydney? I have heard that the guys in Berrima are very good but I would like someone closer to
home for tuning and the more involved maintainance that the car may need. I live near the airport. Can anyone from experience tell me the best type of engine oil to use?
Any advice on any of the above
topics or anything else regarding my type of vehicle will be warmly welcomed... Many thanks

Congrats on your landcruiser. I got Dobinsons springs from TJM(
perth)for $660 on my 73 series and Im very happy with the 2in lift and ride comfort.
The 33in will rub without new springs.
The vibration could be a uni joint,there should be no stiffness or movement when manipulated by hand.
Give the splines/unijoints a grease up if they are dry.
Also jack the front up an look for movement in the wheel bearings.
If your swivel joints are a mess they will need new seals and a bearing repack.
Cheap,but an all-dayer if you do it yourself.
A workshop manual for $30-$40 will pay for itself in no time

The crowd at Berrima have a good reputation.
I recently spent a weekend at a Diesel
forum at
Cooma Diesel in Fyshwick (
Canberra) and was mightily impressed with their setup. You may wan to to make an enquiry there as
well as Berrima. At least it gives you another option.
I have not used either, but am going to have my 80 series "tuned up" at
Cooma shortly.

cooma diesel service (in
Canberra) insisting on an expensive dynotune to tell you what you already know and then not being able to offer solutions for how to fix it!

I also have a 60 series Turbo and have found that a common cause of this is that the front hubs are locked in. Make sure that they are unlocked, as the front prop shaft will turn and if there is any wear in the splines or unbalance it will vibrate at speed. This usually happens at the speed you mention. 100% correct Chris, they were locked. Thats what you get for getting out of a vehicle with auto hubs!! No (or little) vibration at 100kms now!! Have just changed the Finer Filter for a Ryco paper filter (on the advice from Andrew from Berrima DS at the 4wd show today) and tomorrow morning will do the oil and filter... i bought Castrol GTX for Diesel and a Valvoline oil filter.... Nuff of boring you guys... Thanks for all the advice!!

Berrima is a long way from
Sydney when you have to take the Cruiser back have warranty work done, and you will have to go back.
West End Diesel have all the latest gear for setting up diesels. They are at Wetherill Park,
Check out the 4WD mags for phone and address.
As far as
suspension goes I tend to go to TJM but ARB are just as good. Fixing up the
suspension could fix some of your other problems.
Oil is another story, the big name oil companys all say there oil is the best,my advice, find one that is easy to find anywhere in Australia and stay with it.
Good luck setting up the vehicle and rememberthat when buying anything for the vehicle the cost will be in lots of $500

A number of my mates use and recommend Turbo-Glide on Princes Hwy Russell Vale,
Wollongong - 02 4284 7882. I heard others also recommending them, so they've got a good rep.

with the vibration make sure the hubs are disengaged and it isnt in 4wd no mater what the selectors show. put it in h2 and disengauge the hubs then jump underneath and turn the front shaft - it should turn easily in which case look elsewhere for vibration- if it cant be moved it is in 4wd if it moves with some slack then the hubs are in both situations could cause vibrations
