WA trip Shark Bay onto Uluru Options

Thanks Tony, as mentioned im a driver with limited recreational time, working long hours and all during the night, ive had a look on the treks page and is the reason i asked for any input, purely to save me hours studying this site with maps i dont have during my required rest breaks and with my mobile/notepad

Harder still when all i have is google maps, by the time you zoom in to what you would consider a town (crossroads etc) you loose ya bearings (not marbles)

Believe me its understandably overwhelming in the treks pages as without a map if you dont have an understang of the major routes, towns, poi,s, cautions,permits,camp spots etc etc etc.

Smooth, the Gary Junction gets a lot less traffic so is far less corrugated, is more scenic and I can thoroughly recommend the drive. It is still remote, so you do need to be prepared. It does make a much longer route Shark Bay to Yulara, but it depends on whether you are on a tight time frame, or whether you are touring to see the best.

Check My Blogs (2009) for our trip of what we saw, where we stopped and where to get fuel. I also have Blogs for the Great Central Road (2008).

Coming from further south, if you are into remote travel, incorporating the Talawana Track is an option. We went via Marble Bar not the Talawana.

Note the permit requirements are different for the Gary Junction and you need to apply several weeks in advance, not just a one working day like the Great Central Road permits (Western Australian side). For the Northern Territory side of both roads, it is a simple one working day permit.

Exactly what i was hoping for. As the wife is doing her maiden outback trip this sounds like a very suitable learning point,

Ill check out the permit for Gary Junction, doing a same route twice it must have been impressive, understanding youve probably done the others too.

Ive looked in the online shop for maps and saw one late last night on WA camper trailer something or other.

Could either of you possibly recommend a map that will be good enough to show poi,s etc. This one looked ok but the map pic was blurred understandably. No stress but with your experience its easier to ask than to shop around for hours which i dont have.

Most Importantly and with respect im not asking you to shop around for me, if what you have map wise suits your experience and needs ill go with that.
Ive spent months planning routes in the past and yes to find that destination points and time frames dont exist the moment you leave your driveway.
Ive spent 6 months getting 4wd/ camper ready and im just about there, we leave in 7 weeks. I just want to mention although I might sound careless or over confident, thats simply not the case. I have the tools for the job, im just looking for a way back from the bay to the rock.

Once again im very gratefull for your input and will most certainly be looking into your trips.

Forgot to mention the India to Alice trip is one of Cathy's treks and it is detailed in this book very well with distances, gps waypoints, fuel stops, permits ect ect you couldn't ask for a better set of trek notes

Im just on Motherhens Blog now and will look into yours also, I am going to become a paid member but was going to do the spend over $100 online shopping and get the instant 12 months.

I dont mind spendin 100 on maps to cover as much of WA as possible, handy reference material when planning for next year.
