I have a SR5 Hilux 2006.

Question, should the height between the top of the tyre to the bottom of the guard on both the front and back of the vehicle be the same?

I had a steel bull bar put on 6 years ago, my mechanic wants to put new shocks and bigger springs at the front to lift it. So the back and front will be at the same height.

Sorry if this is a silly question.

Thanks

Hi,
I have a 120 Prado with a steel bullbar and a 2nd battery in the engine bay.

I put new shocks on because the OME ones were a bit old and more importantly, HD springs to give the front a lot more support to carry the extra weight.

I have air bags on the rear also to balance the load and the load height.

Works for me.

I have a 2014 that has only 3000klms on it. I measured the height from centre of wheel to top of guard. Back 2 measurements were 500mm exactly. Front passenger was 500mm exactly and drivers side was 496mm. Probably driver side lower due to fact that I normally drive by myself. Next week I have a Lovells/Bilstein suspension kit going in so it will be interesting to see the difference. If you are doing a lot of heavy towing I would expect the back to be a little higher to allow for the extra weight when the tow ball is loaded up

Motor manufacturers go to a lot of trouble to get the right amount of under-steer in their vehicles so they handle properly. If you alter the suspension you can stuff up that under-steer characteristic. You really should get both axles upgraded at the same time with a complete kit from a suspension manufacturer who will offer a complete kit that will maintain the correct characteristics. Cherry picking your own bits can lead to trouble.

NO
prime example is thd TD 100series
from the factory thd front is lower than the rear.
even on my landcruiser, I was going to get it sitting level.
a quick call to ULTIMATE suspension is sydney...which was a decent quality conversation. .not pushing products but telling me the car wont steer safe sitting level.
and every car made HAS to sit front down to steer well on road.
Easily spent 20mins on the phone. .
give them a buzz than getting info off a forum...
yes I have bought off them..
and will do again in future
they even do custom made stuff

That's right for a vehicle to handle correctly the front needs to be a bit lower than the rear .

It would be best to go to a Spring Works and get them to have a look , hey will be able to set it up right .

Hi Wato. Mine is a 2005 with an old man emu heavy upgrade with air bags as well. Front is lower than the back and even with 16ft offroad van on i only need 10psi in the bags for the van to be level. Front still lower than the back with van on.
Cheers Graeme
