Best Tracks in LITTLE DESERT, Vic

Submitted: Thursday, Apr 01, 2004 at 09:09

Happy GU Owner

I am planning a trip through Little Desert, and I was hoping that someone may be able to help with suggestions on best tracks, points of interest, etc.

This will assist me in preparing trip notes for our party.

Thanks in advance

Michael

Michael, have you been in here before? Do a search - all our (!!?? Freudian slip methinks) people went a couple of weeks ago - long posts on it and plenty of photos. Have fun.

Yes, i am an avid reader of peoples posts and love all of the banter here, but keep pretty quiet myself - supposed to be working - not playing !!

I am aware that a lot of you have just been up to LD, and would have dearly loved to have made it myself - had originally planned Simpson Desert crossing for easter and was busily preparing new car for that trip, but alas ---- my dreams have evaporated for the second time ----maybe later in the year (praying for my wife to change her mind now, should work soon, ahh, I can feel that trip coming along in a couple of months), and that is why i am asking for your recent experiences for LD.

I have been through LD before, and am quite capable of planning my own trip through using my maps and experience, but would love to get others opinions from recent experience, as tracks and scenery change remarkably over time ( especially at the moment, following drought throughout that particular region )

Easter is now LD , Border Fence, Big Desert, then home again.

Mt Turner in the western block appears to be the highest point for some distance and offers a good view over the park from the wooden platform.

That should be Mt Moffat in the western block. Mt Turner is in the central block but I haven't been there.

Uncle and I drove to Mt Turner. What a cimb! About ten metres high and even accessible by persons wielding a walking stick. Even got to ring the missus on the CDMA from there.

Thanks Willem thats handy info. You can drive almost to the top of Mt Moffat and CDMA works well from there also. I might do another run across Little Desert during my Easter trip.

Hi Michael - well, thinking about it, Glenn has a site with great pictures on it and he was the one organised the trip. Now, Toonfish has a great map also. Looks like a nice place and should be good over the Easter break. Convince your wife you need to come to the SD in the winter time - June/July is fantastic out there and we'll see you then. There's lots of banter, eh, all good fun though.

Little Desert is a fascinating place with lots of low Mallee scrub and some trees in places. Most of the tracks could be done in a 2wd with a competent river. There are areas of soft sand however and you would have to take care. A good beginners 4wd course. Watch out for the Border Track, there may be some surprises.
