Hi Guys,
New to the forum!
Im looking at going away camping soon somewhere close to Sutherland (Blue Mountains/South Coast) where i can park the car and pretty much set up the tent next to it. I'de love to have running water if at all possible and possibly a small camp fire to cook on and just enjoy. I have an old gas bottle that i have cut the top off which i want the fire in, So pretty small, also stainless steel gauze which i want to put over the top of it to keep embers in. I have been on Parks and Wildlife NSW and alot of their campsites don't allow a fire. I have an all wheel drive with good ground clearance so i can get to some places..

Ive never camped before so first time woo!

Any information will be helpful!

Thanks guys! Adsy!

A good start for you is to get a book called something Weekend escapes close to Sydney by Boiling Billy publications It is about $25 I think and you should be able to pick it up at Rays, BCf etc
It has a lot of day and weekend trips you could do with useful ancillary information

The other thing to check out is the Wikicamps app for other spots around

That would be a pretty good starting point to work with

About ten km south of Narooma is a place called Mystery Bay. Water taps, cold showers, and basic toilets fires allowed. Basically on the beach. About $8.00 per night.

Newnes - Blue Mountains. 2WD access, creek, huge grassy campsites, free, fires ok. Explore shale-oil ruins and glow worm tunnel - good walks. Nat Park toilets, no other facilities. Bring own drinking water and firewood.

Glen Davis - same but no glow worm tunnel. Only a few km from Newnes as the crow flies, but about 60km by road. Go through/past the old town (still inhabited) to the Nat Pk campground about 2km east of the town.

Dunns Swamp. Wollemi Nat Pk. 2 WD access. Lake, canoeing, great walks, beautiful campgrounds, fires ok, $5/night camping plus $7 a day for the car unless you have a pass. NP toilets, no other facilities. Bring own drinking water and firewood. Popular and busy in holidays, quiet otherwise.

Coolendel. Private nature reserve west of Nowra. 2WD access via 11km of fairly rough dirt, but still 2WD. On Shoalhaven R. Large grassy campsites, or sandy spots by the water. Boil river water for drinking or bring your own. They sell firewood, $5 a bag I think. Kiosk, some basic supplies. Google Coolendel for rates - off peak about $16 pppn IIRC. Popular and busy in holidays, quiet otherwise.

There are a couple of nice grassy bush camp sites beside the dirt road into Coolendel, on the RHS as you go toward Coolendel, but no water and no facilities at all. Free

Hope this helps.

Add to the list:

Kangaroo Valley - Bendeela Pondage. Cannot recall if fires are permitted - I think perhaps not. Canoeing, large grassy campground, can get noisy with canoeing groups but you pays your money ($0) and takes your chances. Wombats abound. Can't recall toilet situation. No other facilities, but township of Kangaroo Valley not far away. Bring own water or boil Bendeela Pondage water.

Thanks Alby.

And a correction to my summary of Coolendel. They have reticulated drinking water throughout the campground. And some ablution blocks, though depending where you camp on the large property they may be some distance away.

Newnes or Bendeela are great. The campground near the swing bridge on the six foot track is accessible by all wheel drive if the creeks aren't swollen by rain. Wheeney creek is easy to get to.

Adam,

Only know of a couple of spots in Blue Mountains area. One is South of Glenbrook, at Euroka Clearing(though not really sure if camping is still allowed?) and at Megalong Creek, in Megalong Valley, just south of Blackheath. It used to get pretty crowded 50 years ago, so I doubt if anything has changed. :-)

Another good spot, though in Kanangra-Boyd national park, is at campground near Kanangra Walls. Magic bit of country, and seem to remember there are amenities at campground. When we used to camp there, you could still drive right to the viewing area, and we used to camp on the old dance floor, that used to be in the first cave, at the base of the Walls. A lot of history gone in the name of "saving it for the people".

Bob

Seen it all, Done it all.
Can't remember most of it.
