If we start the
Canning Stock Route going from North to South travelling the Tanami from
Alice Springs, will I have to go through vege/ fruit checkpoint?

There is no
quarantine checkpoint at the
WA/NT border crossed when on
the Tanami Track. The
quarantine checkpoint is located on the Victoria Highway at the border.

Hi Michelle
There are
bins and waste disposal at the Great Northern Highway end (
Halls Creek end) of the Tanami, and it comes down almost to a trust that people will honour quarantine. In saying that the Health Inspector has been seen there on occasion, when he goes out from
Halls Creek, but then living in the area I would probably see that more than most.

Although not strictly relevant when we went past these
bins in 2013 the area was an absolute disgrace. The
bins were overflowing to the extent that the entire area was littered with decomposing food and associated rubbish. Most people try to do the right thing but seeing this made you question whether leaving items here was more of a
hazard than taking them with you.

So from a quarantine perspective, would there be any real contamination possible if all the food is consumed on the Canning before entering farming areas. We are not wanting to do any harm but it is a tricky dilemma. Only planning at this stage.

So if we stock up at
Halls Creek instead, can you buy fresh fruit and vegas there?

Hello Christine and Lindsay, there is a very good
IGA at
Halls Creek that sells fresh fruit and veg. It is a large and comprehensive
shop that will also give you the option of tinned and dried food as
well. A big improvement from our previous trip.

People are quite correct stating there is an
IGA in
Halls Creek. You would also be wise to get any additional fuel there, as out here in the communities it is on average $2.40 a litre, that is both diesel and opal.
Thank you for the comment about the quarantine
bins, I am getting the Chairman from here to contact the
Halls Creek Shire to lodge a complaint.

Might be a bit late as they said they were like that in 2013.

Yes, I am aware that it was said it happened in 2013, but it is worth bringing it to the attention of the new Health Inspector, who also covers the quarantine issues. Something like that will give the area a bad name and a shocking look.

Marc,
Many thanks for your concern regarding the issue of the quarantine
bins and for taking it up with the local authorities. Seeing the area in this state was very disappointing and really did make you wonder if the issue of quarantine was being taken seriously.

There's a permanent
Quarantine checkpoint on the Victoria H/way and another just east of Eucla.
There are honour system
bins on the Gt Central Rd and
the Tanami track.
And there is a roving Quarantine inspection crew who travel along all roads entering WA at some time or another on a random basis.
Getting caught trying to run the gauntlet(not dumping fruit or honey in the
bins at these sites) can be rather expensive if you get caught with illegal produce inside WA
Apart from that, everybody who brings fruit/honey/seeds/soil into WA runs the risk of introducing unwanted plants, insects and/or viruses into the state and thus putting WA primary production at risk.
Don't risk being the one who adversely affects WA farmers livelihood.
Thanks
Disco.

Why not use tinned vegies and dried fruits for a small period of time. A week or so wont hurt and you then have the satisfaction of knowing that regardless of others you have done the right thing. Some of the dried fruits are really nice..apricots, bananas, apple. Fruit juice drinks could be a substitute for a small time.
Reckon you,ll find a solution.
Like someone else said...do the right thing as we don't to risk farmers livelihoods.
enjoy the trip...

Of course we would use them as
well. Just looking at options. Thanks for your input.
