landcruiser 1996 turbo diesel

Can anyone please put me on to a mechanic who is experienced in the landcruiser turbo diesel motors (based in Adelaide). I recently purchased a 1996 turbo diesel landcruiser. It is making a strange ticking noise and a couple of mechanics i have taken it to have contradicted each other in their diagnosis. One says it sounds like a lifter problem and the other says it may be the start of a leak in the exaust gasket.

Wal,

Our '97 tojo turbo does the same thing, haven't worried about it yet. Seem to remember a post on this problem, some months back, probably latter part of last year. Do a search through the archives.

seems no one has come up with the answer to this problem which sound relatively common.
it doesn't sound like it will cause to many problems but surely someone knows what is causing it!

Not real familiar with the overhead valve gear in these engines, but feel it might be a sticky shim or something similar. The noise appears to be up the top, not lower down. We have done around 240K clicks with no problems.

I had trouble yesterday finding an old post, but a different choice of key words cures all.

Could also be a big end just about to let go. I would not push it too hard untill you find out, but I would be taking the sump off and looking at the crankshaft journals.

Try Alltrac on South Rd Mile End.
Might also be worth getting an opinion from 80scool:

I remember some chat about ticking in the 1HD-FT motor, and I remember it being normal for this motor and was caused by "crankshaft flex". Big ends were not a problem with this motor.

i also have the same noise with my '97 turbo and seem to remember reading some years back that it was a noise comming from the big ends.toyota told me just a noise and nothing to worry about as no harm is being done. it has been noted my conscern as it was just out of warranty. 150,000 kms and no problems so far.....
