Steinbauer Chip over DP Chip

Hi Guys,

I am trying to get an unbiased opinion on the difference between the Steinbauer performance chip and the DP performance chip. I have a 2010 Toyota 76 Series GXL Wagon 4.5 Ltr. V8 single Turbo. The price quoted for the Steinbauer is $2990 plus installation, vs $1495 for the DP Chip which I can install myself. Which chip will give the best result? Both companies quote similar performance results, so why should I purchase the more expensive Steinbauer, when for half the price I can purchase the DP Chip.
Macca.

McL,

At that sort of $, you might also have a look at the Rapid or consider an integrated chip. I have had outstanding results from a chip in my V8 79 series but did not opt for a straight plug and play fuel rail or fuel pulse type chip. Mine is integrated into the fuel and tuning system of the vehicle and they spend a good lot of time on the dyno getting the settings right to ensure that you don't melt a hole through the piston of your valuable investment.

There is a good deal of info about the Steinbauer and other chips here;

Diesel performance chips

Hi McLaren,I fitted the DP Chip to my 95 series Toyota Prado, best thing I did great torque and extra power, when I sold it I took it off and when I drove it after removal ,it was like you had a great weight on behind. Have not used Steinbauer, but for the price it was a no brainer, and took me only 35 minutes to fit,and I believe the later ones are plug right in,so I would go for it and Australian as well

I have used the Steinbauer chip in a Hilux for 4 years now. Can't fault the chip and you can unplug it and revert to OEM in a blink. I have never heard a bad thing about the SB Chip and don't know much about the DP but at $3k the SB is expensive, my Hilux was around $1200 installed. You can only really compare dyno reports and if the Dp warranty and after sales support is great then why not? I can only suspect that Steinbauer have spent big on testing the chips and can justify the price perhaps but I think $1495 is reasonable and $3k a little too dear imo.

Hi,

I run a DP chip in my 2008 troopy, same engine as you. Drives like a V8 petrol car when chipped. Cant fault the chip, I back the setting off slightly when towing to keep exhaust temps down. Consider installing a 3" exhaust also, mine is Beaudesert, and have the vehicle dyno'd when you fit the chip for optimum settings. Make sure you install an EGT gauge to keep an eye on temps.

Regards
Craig

Have you thought of having the engine remapped?
I know of 2 companies that do it in Australia... Agritune and Quantum I would check it out and you might be pleasantly surprised

I agree - remapping is a far elegant and safer solution as all engine parameters are taken into account not just forcing for fuel into the engine through either increased pressures or injector duration.

I can remove the map through the OBD2 port in about 2 minutes if the car goes into the garage for a service and put it back on after. Manufacturers change the parameters of their engines by changing the engine map in various circumstances - they do not use chips.

My map was a lot cheaper than the prices quoted for chips in this thread and I have the confidence that the engine is operating safely.

I'd be inclined to get another quote on the Steinbauer as that seems a bit steep to me. Had mine fitted 4 years ago for $1400/1500.

The Steinbauer operates by timing, allowing it to fuel for longer, whereas the DP operates by higher fuel pressure.

I've read countless threads and articles on this subject. I am still uncertain about installing anything until my warranty runs out first. But, from what I've read the Steinbauer oy alters the time the injectors is open. Resulting in no increased pressure on components. On that alone I would choose the Steinbauer. I have heard alot about severe damage to engines with the pressure increase system.

People often make the comment about waiting until they are out of warranty before fitting a chip but do not understand the logic
Why does it make any difference? if you are not confident that a mod you are doing won't cause harm to your vehicle why do it?
it is going to cost you dollars either way

McLaren 3030,
Coincidentally I have the same vehicle as you and I have been exploring the whole chip question over the last few weeks. Not specifically Steinbauer v DP but whether to fit one at all. Mine is just out of warranty (2011 model) so that didn't influence me but a discussion with my mechanic who drives a 78 series himself ultimately helped me to decide not to install one. His opinion is that he would only consider Steinbauer but unless there is a lack of performance or the vehicle is sluggish - why bother. Two things that I have done that have shown a marked improvement in power is a Safari snorkel and the 3" exhaust - neither of which were put on to derive more power. These were done at different times and I could definitely notice the change on each occasion. I pull a camper trailer and do a bit of high country travelling as well as long distance touring and I am very happy with the power. Whilst I have loved Nissans for a long time the loud pedal on the LC76 delivers like no Nissan I have owned.
Good luck with your decision and please repost and let us know if / when you do fit one.
Ken

Thanks to everyone that has responded to my question. I have had a long discussion with a point of sale distributor who just happens to sell both units. He has explained the difference in price. Because the Steinbauer changes the pulse time of each injector, and I have a V8 with a fuel rail for each bank of cylinders, it basically needs two units, one for each fuel rail, and eight injector cables. The Steinbauer unit for a 4 cylinder like those in a Hilux, Prado, Navara etc is only $1500. Also having spoken with a Toyota mechanic, he has advised that while can cannot endorse either unit, that as the Steinbauer is a pulse type unit and does not increase Fuel Rail pressure, this would be the one he would fit if it were his vehicle. Basically this has made my decision a little easier, and while it is more expensive, I will fit the Steinbauer chip. At the moment I cannot afford both the chip and a 3" exhaust, so the exhaust will have to wait.

there is a diesel tuning specialist who frequents Landcool and regardless of chip brand, refuses to fit a chip unless the exhaust has been upgraded first

If your vehicle has cruise control, confirm that the steinbauer works while the cruise is on. (If this is important to you) - I am pretty sure it doesn't work with cruise control 'on' in the 100 series - but unsure of other cars... Just a thought...

I started with the Steinbauer Chip alone and have had that for 4 years, only got my exhaust done last year. I got Diesel Tech in Lilydale to do the exhaust. He suppllied and fitted a 3" system and gave me the varying dyno reports with and without the Chip and before the exhaust. The low down torque boost was amazing and because the Hilux only has a 4 speed auto it made the car so much more driveable down low and my fuel economy has gone up. The exhaust enables the turbo to spool up straight away and is really noticeable. Very happy with the combined result and am closing in on 250,000KMS.

I have heard bad things about DP, have a look at unichip as another option. You ned to get a 3d map, and this is usually from monitoring boost and fuel...something dp doesnt do

All the DP Chip did to my BT50 was send it into limp mode when towing and the going got a bit tough, even after sending it back to get re-checked I got the same result.
I noticed a slight improvement in performance but no difference to fuel economy.
It's somewhere in the garage if anyone wants it!!!
