Hi all,

Have read regularly of the poor conditions of this track so I'm after some opinion on whether this detour off the Oodnadatta Track is worth the effort.

We intend stopping at most of the ruins along the way (Strangways, Beresford, Mt Dutton etc) so if Peake is much of the same, is it worth the time & effort & if so how long would it reasonably take to drive in & out after having a good look around?

Also happy to accept feedback on the current road conditions from recent users.

Thanks.

With the Oodnadatta Track on my bucket list this thread 'peaked' my interest. The only input I have is to raise an anomaly in Places. Is the Peake of which you speak Peake Ruins or Old Peake They both have photos of what appears to be the same place. As per the map and co-ordinates they are in different positions.
Any one with first hand knowledge?

Greta / Rod, very worthwhile.
Besides the ruins of the old tele stn, there's an old mining operation up the small adjacent creek.
Track doesn't seem as bad driving out.

We have recently visited this site. The road in is not brilliant, however we lowered our tyre pressures and were able to tow our Tvan into the site. We did notice that those with large caravans etc., did leave them at the beginning of the road. The last part of the road, just before you reach the main site, could be quite challenging if it was wet. There are a number of soaks to drive through and the some big holes to negotiate. The site is worth visiting for a number of reasons. It is well off the main road thus the less desirable elements don't visit. It is also the site of an overland telegraph repeater station, an old mining operation and it represents a significant site in the history of the pastoral development of South Australia.

I was there in 2008 so no first-hand knowledge of current track conditions. At that time I was driving a Troopy and no trailer so had no problems. Going by what others have posted, sounds like conditions are about the same as I remember.

I thought the historic ruins out there were well worth the visit! I spent the better part of a day out there. The four pics currently shown on the Old Peake place page are mine.

I have been past the turn off many times. The above comments have me wanting to call in next time. Can you / are you allowed to camp near the ruins?

Hi Triggy,
As I mentioned previously many people seem to leave their caravans/campertrailers next to the Oodnadatta Track rather than negotiating the rather rough road into the site. I cannot recall whether camping was allowed. There are no facilities at the site and the carpark area in not that large. Others may be able to offer further advice.
