Hello all
As of 4pm EST on Friday 24th July 2015 I joined the ranks of the unemployed. I have spent the last 37 years helping to protect the fishery resources of NSW as a Fisheries Officer but time kept creeping up and my body did not recover as quickly as it once did after some days camped along riverbanks and getting small boats down and then back up steep river banks -some days we did in excess of 100 k's in the boat so the
seat used to get pretty hard too.
There is still lots to do around our
home with painting and the like to keep me busy for quite some months. Kate ( my partner for those who have not met us) gets to the magic 65 in October next year and will hopefully want to retire and smell the roses with me.
Our current camper - the mighty Trak Shak - will be on the market very soon (only one more short trip next weekend) and the following week I head to Queensland to collect the replacement - a second hand AOR Quantum. Something that is more older folk friendly that will allow us to do the tended travels with a few more creature comforts. I did not want a full size caravan as that extra width would restrict the
places we can go whereas the Quantum is very much built for off road travel.
I hope to meet many of the EO family during our travels and visit the
places I get envious reading about in other people's
blogs.

So many of people working for country energy will be joining you very soon and the list of cut back s just keep getting longer
I know for a fact Broken
Hill Fisheries office has been closed for some time now I am not sure if they were put off or moved to another area

Mate the office at the
Hill was closed about 7 years ago. That was a result of a change of government deciding that those officers could be better utilised any other locations. They were not made redundant

John, I would be surprised if I haven't meet you around the traps. I ran into Peter T doing the rounds on Tantangra a few months ago. I hadn't seen him in years. As soon as he looked at my lic he remembered me.

The rainbows their often have a nematode worm which can cause a cyst, ugly but harmless.

Enjoy the "new" Quantum, I'm envious.
Nothing like having the wife, or a friend, saying: "What are you doing?" Says you: "Nothing!" They reply: "I thought you did that yesterday?" And you reply: "I wasn't finished........."
Don't forget to spend a few days at
Winton when you're touring. You could drop a line in the
Old Cork waterhole............and
check for nets! :-)

John with all the changes at DPI it might be a good time to be getting out others I know have all said it's better to be getting out now & remember it we'll , than with or the stupid changes that are happening now (been a supplier for decades)

I offically became retired on 1 /7 after being semi for a couple of years and I like it.
I have read several articles recently along the lines of retirement = death and I wish those people would go away as its taken a long time to get their and I don't want it diminished.
I have noted that the bush is a lot quieter on week days.
I am still resisting getting a van of any type and still prefer to sleep in the Patrol but I can see one on the horizon in next few years.

First let me say thank you for your service to your country and state, I have a couple of friends working in the department of fisheries in W.A. and out of all the public service branches I reckon the fisheries officers have the best working environment, and you are very special people, thank you.
you have also made me very envious of you as your wife will probably join you next year I have still got to wait another three years thank to changes the labour government brought in my wife has to work until she is 66. but them is the breaks. enjoy your retirement, and the travels.

John, I'm another who opted out of full time work this year and we leave in 11 sleeps for a 3 month trip to the UK and Europe. Next year we are planning to replace the red dust that has washed off the 4by since out last big trip.

Just a quick thanks to the
well wishers. We certainly hope to travel as much of Oz as we can before it all gets too much. Also want to do one more trip back to the UK to see friends and family - that will have to wait til Kate retires next year.
