good afternoon ,
this is one for the mechanics that are on board, At the moment I own a Nissan Pathfinder Ti550 v6 diesel , It is coming to the end of its warranty, so far I have had the egr valve replace twice, and now the intercooler radiator, is now leaking oil and it is about to be replaced, now the vehicle has not done 90000 klm's yet but at the end of the week it will be four years old. and out of warranty, I was researching the landrover discovery 4 v6 twin turbo diesel as a replacement vehicle for it, but it would appear that it suffers with the same problems, and while I was looking around I have been informed that the landrover also has gear box and axle problems. I thought I could block off the egr valve in the Nissan but apparently that is a no, no. on the v6 motor. also can you get a heavy duty Inter cooler radiator[if that is the right word for it] for the Nissan. Landrover and Nisan apparently share the same intercooler hence the same problem. also could some one share some light on the axle and gear box problems on the landrover.
So Gentlemen and ladies, or any one else for that matter that can shed some light on these problem could you please do so. The pathfinder is a good tow vehicle and not to shabby off road as well, but our next big trip will be up the C S R and I don't particularly want to be taking a suspect turbo inter cooler up into that country.

Broodie, you can certainly get your intercooler recored, any good aluminium fabricator should be able to do it, probably cheaper than a replacement factory one. As for the other questions, have no idea sorry.

thanks for that John, I didn't know they could be repaired, so I have been told the damage is where the pipes go into the cooler and the metal has split.

Always wondered why they didn't put that V6 in the Patrols, Broodie. Maybe the EGR problems might one reason why? :-)

Don't know much about either of these vehicles, but what I was going to suggest is upgrade to a Landcruiser 76 series wagon. Smaller and cheaper than the 200 series, but still heaps of "oomph" to tow your van. And plenty of options and upgrades available to empty your wallet too.

Or maybe a Dual Cab 79 series with alloy canopy???

Sourcing an after market intercooler shouldn't be too hard. Think there's a number of reputable fabricators in the eastern states. One member on EO does that sort of work, as I recall.

Hi Bob,
as much as I would like to go back to a manual cruiser I don't have the luxury of being able to use a clutch anymore, so whatever we trade into next is going to have to be an Automatic, It has been that way for a few years now that is why we got the Pathfinder it was Auto and not to big for the wife to drive. and also 3.5 tonne towing capacity, good car when new just things are starting to go wrong with it, so it is time to move on and replace it .
any way thanks again for your input.

Broodie based on what you're looking at, have you considered a Jeep as an option? From what I hear the current model is pretty good and has all the bells and whistles and has a good towing capacity.

Cheers

Hi Duncan,
the thought of a jeep in my drive way sends shivers up my spine, the may be good cars and a few people that I know do have them the only trouble is the people that we know that do have them are always having problems with them either over heating gear problems and Mark just had his rear diff replaced, so to answer your question No I haven't, so maybe it is time to go and have another look at the new ones. We don't discount anything in the research stage of vehicle replacement. thank you.

Not sure where you are getting your information on the D4 from but it is mostly totally incorrect. Like all CRD diesels the EGRs should be considered a service item to be replaced every few years - alternatively get them blanked. I have the 2.7 and mine are blanked with no issues.

Not sure what the gearbox issues you have been told about on the D4 - get it serviced in accordance with ZF requirements and their are no issues - the issues happen when the oil is not changed every 100,000km or so. Lack of servicing is the issue not the gearbox.

I have never heard of any axle problems - so not sure what this is.

I dont believe the Nissan and D4 share the same intercooler - completely different cars with no commonality at all. The D4 has no issues with intercoolers.

Hi Garrycol,
from what I have been told the Landrover V6 and the pathfinder V6 are the same motor, the hse landrover discovery has the twin turbo on it, and the salesman at southern Landrover told me that. and I was also told that both v6 motors Nissan and Landrover are built by Renault. Both Nissan and Landrover have told me that so that is where my information is coming from, about the motors, but the reports of the break downs in the landrover diff, axles and gear boxes are coming from Different sources. I don't know about the four cylinder landrovers as I have never researched them and I take it your 2.7 is a four cylinder motor. Would you consider telling a bit more about your 2.7 as you have me intrigued now with the blocking off of the egr valve, has it hurt your motor at all. I am also interested in what the 2.7 tows like would it be comfortable towing a 2.5 tonne fully loaded caravan. thank you for your input Garry it has me asking more Questions. thank you

Your statements show you really do not know anything about the Disco 4. You need to do some serious research.

For starters the V6 engines in the Nissan and D4 are not the same - the old Nissan 3.0 4 cylinder was certainly a Renault engine and may be the V6 is - I do not know but it is definitely not the Ford PSA engine that is in the Landrovers. This engine was developed by Ford Europe in conjunction with Citroen and Peugeot. This family of V6 diesels can be found in Jaguar, Citroen, Peugeot, Landrover and in 2.7 guise the Ford Territory.

The 2.7 engine is just the first iteration of these V6 engines and can be either single turbo in the Landrovers and Ford Territorys or twin turbo in the Jaguar - the 3.0 versions are all twin turbo and the 3.6 Litre V8 versions are also twin turbo. The D4 only has two versions of the 3.0 twin turbo diesel engines. Not sure what 4 cylinder engines you are talking about but they have never been fitted to a D4 and are probably confused with the Defender engine - completely different.

Re issues about gearboxes and axles I think you are getting confused with some models of up to 50 years ago where LR make axles as the weakest point in the drivetrain as it was easier to change an axle than a gearbox.

Basically the 2.7 TDV6 was in the Disco 3s and very early Disco 4s and later Disco 4s were two 3.0 SDV6/TDV6 engines - a lower output one that replaced the 2.7 and a higher output one that was close in performance to the Range Rover Sport 3.6 TDV8.

No issues with having the EGRs blanked - have a read of the recent thread about blanking a Toyota diesel. The 2.7 (along with the other TDV6 engines) has a 3.5 tonne tow capacity and certainly does that OK - the 2.7 TDV6 and the 3.0TDV6 engines have similar power and torque the the 4.5 litres single turbo Landcruiser TDV8 and the twin turbo Cruiser TDV8 diesel respectively.

Whoever you have been talking too really do not know what they are talking about and you need to do some more research.

Also - remember the D4 is in the same class as the full size cruiser and patrol vehicles - the D4 is larger than a 200 series on the inside and a tad smaller on the outside - so is one level up from the Pathfinder and a far more sophisticated vehicle than a Pathfinder.

As an addition and we cannot amend posts.

The specs of your current Nissan diesel are mid way between the Disco 4 2.7 TDV6 and the top spec D4 3.0 SDV6. So all things being equal you current car should tow a little better than the 2.7 but not quite as good as the 3.0. Also as said the Disco is more sophisticated than a Pathfinder so other factors such as sway assist in the D4 and its air suspension should make it a better tow vehicle - WDH are not used on D4s.

sorry I did not mean to upset you, I just go on what people tell me and hope to Christ that they are not leading me up the garden path I have always thought that the 2.7 was a 4 cylinder as in the defender, but as you rightly point out I don't know much about landrover, but I am learning heaps from people like you that are prepared to share their knowledge with people like me that don't know a great deal about landrovers. I have owned the Pathfinder for 4 years now, and as stated earlier it is getting on toward replacement time, and from what you have told me our next tow vehicle will probably be a landrover 4. thank you very much for your input into my queries.

Not upset at all and certainly not advocating you buy a D4, afterall buying a car comes down very much to personal taste and requirements.

To make those decisions you need to be aware of the facts related to the vehicles you are interested in, take them for a drive and then make your decision.

Certainly I am a Landrover person and have a Range Rover Sport 2.7TDV6 but in my near family we also have a Toyota 200 series Sahara and a late model Hilux so can see the strengths and weaknesses of the various models.

If you do decide to go the D4 THIS is what you can do to the Jappers (3.0TDV6 vs 4.5TDV8)

Good luck with whatever you decide on.

Just love it........... my nissan does the same thing to the cruisers and Hiluxes, but I wish I had more ground clearance in some instances. Never seen that video before very informative.
thanks Garry

Get a catch can for the turbo and intercooler setup.
just get your hands on a quality after market intercooler.
you have in your hands a brilliant engine..
good power and torque as well as frugal on the fuel .
either unladen or loaded up.
also get yourself a aftermarket radiator too if the factory one keeps breaking.

Have a look at the Isuzu's. You have to get the current model though, as the next one will drop down from 3l turbo intercooler light truck engine, to a 2.5l twin turbo.

Not associated with Isuzu, but a very satisfied customer.

Hi Broodie H3 I have an Isuzu MUX LSU seven seater and I am more than happy with it. Price mid forties with towbar and a couple of extras thrown in .3000kg towing and good econony towing my van weighing 1650 kg over 4010 ks using 510 litres with a good mix of towing conditions but no head winds.5 year warranty and capped price servicing.
I realise there are several other good 4x4 s out there with may be better econony but it is only a alternative for you to consider. cheers, Brian
