UHF Radio

Submitted: Tuesday, May 04, 2004 at 12:57

Walter Here

I am looking to purchase a UHF radio. For mounting I have decided to go for a remote head unit.

Which unit do I buy the Uniden UH013 or the GME TX3400.

Do I need Selcall? It is included with the GME and Uniden is $79 extra.
Uniden has VOX capability which I do like.

I believe the Uniden is dust proof and the GME is not.

I am green to UHF vehicle radio. To date we have only used the Uniden hand helds.

Many thanks

G'Day Walter

I have had both brands of radio. My UHF is a TX3400, I have the remote head mounted on top of the steering column cowl which is perfect for me.

In my opinion the GME is the better quality radio. VOX is overrated as the more cabin noise there is, the harder it is to use. Most of the radios around that price range will have selcall. I have a uniden handheld for when I leave camp or am otherwise away from the vehicle.

Personally wouldnt wee on Uniden car unit. Had one Uniden (UH011)unit it ended in the bin - seriously. Iron Pete had one too, his ended up the same.
I have a UH056 hand held which is quite good. So they can do SOMETHING right.

Had a 3400 brilliant unit. Now have a 3800 - cause I can... :)~ 3400 will always do a good job.

You want remote head, why is that? the 3200 is cheaper, and just as good for the average punter. www.prestigecom.net.au is the cheapest place to get GME gear from.

Do you need Sellcall? Not really Ive never used it in 3 yrs. But only you can answer if you need it..

Nothing is 100% dustproof, since it has to have some form of venting to let heat out.

Also spend more money on the ariel and wiring than more on a radio... Radios are all "FAIRLY" on par, its the goodies that go with them that make the difference.

there's a group of us with GME's and we use the selcall a bit. If you are away from the car you can selcall your mate and he will hear his radio beeping so he knows you have tried to call and will get back to you. If you are trying to contact someone the selcall will only get through if you are in range. It is a handy option.
Wouldn,t worry about the VOX option. Have found that it picks up all the cabin noise as well as the person speaking which made it hard to understand the person speaking

Good choice Walter....GME are an Aussie company with a quality background. Prestige are IMHO the best going around for comms gear!! Of course I'd say that being a Sandgroper!!!!! ;-)
