THAT TIME OF YEAR

Submitted: Tuesday, May 04, 2004 at 16:26

Davoe

here in the goldfields now things have cooled down it is field season so i swap my pushbike for a 4wd, computer for a gps bed for a swag and office for the bush and assist geoligists with their fieldwork most of the driving is either on tertiary tracks(or less) or complete bush bashing as the information is considered more important than the vehicles (sorry greenies just the way it is) this year i have travelled nw of norseman following historic woodlines and visiting old woodcutters camps while driving around saltlakes and dodging camels. next is about 120k n/e of kalgoorlie taking in areas around yowie rocks and curara soak then it will be south west of norseman and into the fraser ranges. all the time getting not only paid but paid extra for the overtime (not to mention all my camping gear is tax detuctable). My question is if you enjoy it is it still work?

Yes I would say it is work, enjoyable, but work - my last Geological field trip in '97 was based in Marble Bar for 2 months, and 'attacking' Granite boulders with a sledge hammer was work, as was digging for 5 hours getting the Troopie out of a bog !
After a few days in the bush we would return to 'our house' at the Bar, and also drive to Port Hedland to restock every 2/3 weeks.

The Woodlines around Coolgardie are very interesting - spent a few days exploring there in '98 - there a few good books about this subject as well.

Nobody has commented on
"100l water 250l fuel 12ply tyres warn winches upgraded suspension etc" - sounds similar specs to our work Troopies.

and
"although with around 40 - 50k on the clock they are geting old and will be replaced after this year" - Yep - ours were buggered at 40 000 kms !!

Question - may be out of your area of work
Do you know anything about the track to the Calvert Ra via Eagle Highway (north off the Warburton road) and Constance Headland ?

Keep up the good 'work'
Colin

The vehicles are actually in good nick mechanically apart from a few dings underneath fuel tanks etc the bodys are fairly well dented and scratched. under the lease conditions they are not kept long then they are fixed up before return and auctioned out so someone will buy a botched up ute that has been serviced every 10,000k (all the goodies are removed) and yea that is out of our area as we only do the kalgoorlie region
