Finke Gorge/Boggy Hole

There has been a couple of postings in May re traversing through the length of Finke Gorge. OFFICIALLY THE GORGE IS STILL IMPASSABLE, { http://www.nt.gov.au/ipe/dtw/links/roadreport.shtml } but many vehicles are now making it through. As far as the Gorge being declared impassable, in the event of becoming stranded, the Authorities will not attempt any rescue. Only experienced drivers with well set up vehicles should even think about the trip. Because of the numerous sand drifts, washouts & etc, towing a trailer or attempting with soft 4WD's would be foolhardy. Yes, there was an idiot with a hire Honda CRV trying to get out to Boggy Hole that had to be extricated from a sand drift. He got as far as the Finke/Ellery junction through sheer stupidity or bloody mindedness and was lucky his clutch hadn't packed it in. When asked if he had advised the hire company of his intentions, his answer "Well we did tell them we were going to do some offroading".

Pen you are right about boggy hole.We travelled through it in August last year. It is the type of track that only very experienced drivers should attempt and for saftety with another vechicle.The main water crossing was about 1.3 meters deep and very long as you had to drive along the river to find a suitable exit point.Some tracks lead to dead ends in the sand and once you stop there is no going anywhere without help. We did tow a purpose built offroad trailer behind a even more purpose built fourby and had no hassells but would certainly not recommend this to the every day traveller. The sand ,and quick sand certainly gives a new meaning to the word soft ,the long stretches come with little or no notice to able to power up. But the scenery is breath taking and we will be looking foward to coming back and spending a lot more time in that little area.

Glen, Have been there a number of times over the years, but since the last few wet years, can't get over the amounts of birds & fish there and the amount of water still along the length of the Gorge. Agree with you, it is a top spot and that's why we keep going back. Cheers, pen
