I have recently purchased a Mazda CX5 for my wife wishing to have the best of both worlds ie good car to drive in the city with some off road capability.
I have upgraded the car to include Cooper All Terrain tyres slightly wider than standard and have upgraded the suspension. It still has only 210mm clearance unladened. I will be taking the car on a 4wd course to assess its capability
Personally I have a good deal of experience driving on gravel and dirt roads.

We intend to tackle the GRR late July early August to minimise the river crossings and we wont be going off the main road for any distance. We will not be towing a van. The question is will the car be capable of handling the GRR if we drive to the conditions and with in the vehicles limitations.

Any comments would be welcome.

Clearance shouldn't be an issue for the CX5 on the Gibb...with your suspension and tyre investment, that just leaves 'taking it easy'.....and checking on fuel range (last I heard, Imintji roadhouse was closed).

A lot of 4wd courses will be out of the car's range. I've had the likes of Honda CRV's on our introductory courses and they can't go far off road without getting stuck by simply lifting a wheel on mildly rutted tracks. I'm not familiar with the CX5 AWD system though. The GRR is a gravel road so it shouldn't have much trouble with that. Fuel range is something to be aware of as stated above.

As said, there is no reason that you would not be able to travel the Gibb River Road itself in you car, subject to no unseasonal rain. The furthest distance between fuel outlets is between Mount Barnett Roadhouse and El Questro Village at 330 kilometres. I can provide full details of distances and services provided privately if so requested.
