Hi,
I have a Garmin Nuvi 660 we purchased in 2004 and it has been a great unit although it is now not the primary GPS unit on the vehicle.
Latterly when we turn it on, that is start the car, it comes up with the words 'low battery'. I was wondering if it has a internal battery that is dying, it has been plugged into a vehicle all its life.

That is most definitely what is happening, their internal battery has a limited life, which I reckon is reduced by being plugged in all the time, mines done the same (mines a 3780), still works but you get that message every start up. Cest la vie.

Thanks for that Bonz, just curious how long has yours been getting the same message, ours doesn't do it all the time but is getting more frequent.

It happens on and off, and seems to be linked to how long its been off the car charge, I cant put my finger on what exact conditions cause it, and I have tried as I was going to speak to Garmin about it and wanted to get my story correct. Suffice to say I haven't spoken to them, and I just use it on the car charger.

My Tomtom has always had a very short battery life until I bought one on Ebay and replaced it. It seems a lot of the GPS's around 2008 had poor batteries from the factory

Yes the battery can be replaced you will need to carefully first remove the flip up antenna , you will require a jewelers phillips screw drive and i use a plastic guitar pick to run around the edge to carefully prior open. Some after market battery kits come with opening tools .

The new Hema's are great Graham and you will find it will be the only touring GPS that you need in your vehicle.
It is still cold down here, so make the most of that warm weather.

Thanks for that Stephen, we have Oziexplorer with the Hema maps on a 10" Samsung tablet, set up by a member on here as our primary GPS but it is always nice to have another back up to confirm where we are. Was looking forward to getting a new GPS but looks like we may be able to continue with the old one.
Yes it is nice here 33 deg and they tell me the crops are looking good even up our way.

Yep, out 760 got to the point where it couldn't last the 30 second shutdown period. Replacing the battery is cheap and straightforward if you're handy with fiddly things.

I had the same problem with
mine, which turned out to be a fault in the connector at the back of the unit. By holding the connector in with an elastic band (or wife's hair tie) around the connector and passing over the left hand surround of the screen to hold it in firmly, the problem was fixed.

Hi Graham, We had a similar Garmin unit for about six years and were very happy with it till it started locking up. A few years back, we bought a Garmin 2797 LMT with free lifetime map and traffic upgrades, 7" screen. What a difference, plenty of new features with fuel usage and cost etc, The 2797 is still a current model, you wont look back. regards, Michael
