Hi,

Can anyone tell me how to tell if there is a coolant leak or thermostat blockage in a RM2350 90L 3 way fridge.

Can't get it cold on gas. Have cleaned flue, has got plenty of flame , has new element, just doesn't get cold.

Thanks

Does it cool on 240volt or 12 volt?

Hasn't worked on 12v for a while, was working on 240, but it's not now.

Ok, so there are a couple of things it could be, in ascending order of severity.

1. Faulty thermostat
2. Coolant is bubble locked, by that I mean there is an issue when the coolant no longer circulates correctly through the system.
3. You've lost all your coolant gas which is a mixture of Ammonia and other gasses.

In the old days we would take the fridge out and turn it upside down for a day then put it back in. That seems to reset the flow of coolant.

How a 3 way fridge works

Thermostat usually not involved when on 12v.

Yeah, but some of them do run the 12 volt through the thermostat as well. Mostly later models though!

Don't know about a thermostat blockage, but we had a problem with our Dometic fridge (not same model) which was caused by the thermostat, the expert just turned it up higher than what we would normally do and it fired up, but the thermostat was faulty and had to be replaced.
If you have a coolant leakage you will know about it, because there will be a strong ammonia smell.

Thanks for that. No ammonia smell, so that's good.

As you have said there is plenty of flame so whether the thermostat is working or not the fridge should be working with a full flame. If the thermostat impeded the flow of gas and there was no flame that is another matter. It appears to be a refrigerant problem.

our fridge was only 5 yrs old and had similar problem. Apparently the pipes get blocked with 'sludge'. We were quoted $1300 for new parts (in Broome) plus labour. New fridge over $3000.
Ridiculous for a 5 yr old fridge.
So bought an inverter domestic fridge, extra battery and 600wt inverter - all up $1500 - just had to modify the space a bit and are very happy with it
