D'day Hesh

Just looked at Hema maps - about 65 k from Coward Springs to the turn to go into Halligans Bay and then 62 k in. Time will depend on track conditions and how many times you stop for photos etc. Take plenty of water

Cheers

Roughly 250k return trip? Worse case 5hour drive?

I was wondering if it was possible to do this and drive up to Oodnadatta on the same day, but looks like I'll have to stop at Williams Creek for the night

Thanks John

I would much rather stay at William Creek than Oodnadatta, or you could stay out at Halligan Bay for the night.

That actually might work out!

CS -> HB and next day head up to Williams Creek.

Stay at Halligan Bay and get up early. The sunrise over the lake is glorious.

Deadset one of my favourite memories of places I have camped. Watching a dingo running across the salt pans on the drive out in the morning is also a great memory.

From memory it would be around a 300km round trip.
You didn't mention what time of the year you want to do it, track conditions will make all the difference as to the timing, normally it would slower from the turn off to Halligan Bay than it would be from Coward Springs to the turn off. We did the Oodnadatta Track in August last year on the way to do the Anne Beadell Highway, then it was a comfortable 90kmh towing a Tvan. Could easily have gone faster, but no reason to!

Hi Shaker

This will be in early May. Is Halligan Bay worth the drive? I've only seen handful of photos

Rangana, you will be rushing at 250 to 300km per day. It's a bucket list thing but you could start late, drive slow, call in at William Creek pub and arrive at the bay 4pm to camp and relax. Watch the sunset and then the stars and soak it all in. Pix of Halligan Bay at this link. It's bleak and could be windswept...... W

Hi Guys
Just a few thoughts about Halligan Bay etc.
We travelled there in July 2013. The road out was extremely rough and although you can camp out there the wind would make it extremely unpleasant. The area is very much like a beach but without the water. Overall well worth a visit. We have stayed at both William Creek and Oodnadatta CV parks. William Creek is the preferred option but Oodnadatta, although a little rough, was acceptable. We stayed at both parks in May 2015.
Hope this helps.

Up and back in one day can be done. Not recommended as such visits are often one time only tick-the-box and you risk missing lots. Road in can be very rough and bull dust holes can cause problems/damage. Getting there in the middle of a windy day was not a nice experience last time I was there. Camping overnight for a sunset and a sunrise allows more opportunity to soak up a great experience of a special place.
