Tanami Rd & firewood

I just consulted my photos and noticed that in some there you can see the occasional ghost gums and other eucalypts.
In some photos you can just see very low scrubby shrubs.
On my occasional "comfort stops" where I had to walk in from the road a little, I remember stepping over grasses and low shrubs.
I reckon you should carry firewood if you were looking at camping out.
We stayed the night at Tilmouth Well and it was very nice. It was June, and there was just one other couple. Almost like camping in the bush, with the dry river bed behind us and a few gum trees around...but we had a short walk to very clean amenities and a restaurant with very decent food.

You would be able to gather wood within the first 200km of the track. The vegetation thins out after that and it maybe harder to find.

From Alice to approx Mt Doreen there is plenty of firewood and opportunities to collect same. Ya gotta love mulga!'

Next worthwhile location with timber for fires, from recall, is the Tanami Downs intersection near the abandoned Rabbit Flat. Again, mulga.

The vast shrub land of the central sections of the Tanami Rd has extremely few trees which will surrender firewood.

It's interesting that black Gidgee and cork wood never seem to have branches to burn.

Then it's a sparse run to Sturt Creek; the last leg of the road into Halls Creeek, from Sturt Creek, has many timbered areas.

So, depending on where you stop and the distances between, you may not have to carry any at all.

Are you towing a caravan?

Does it have a timber frame?

If you answer yes to both those questions, by the time you get half way along the Tanami you will have plenty of firewood.

Particularly enjoyed the NT end...not so much the WA end.
I was fascinated with the ruins of occasional buildings and wondered the history behind them...did they have to abandon their dreams or did they find success and build grander buildings that I can't see over the next hill?
We were on our way to the Kimberley and came across the Plenty Highway from western Qld, up the Tanami, around the Gibb and back through to western Qld via the Savannah. We didn't do the other road you enquired about....but "there's always next time" as they say, eh?!
I was waiting for a comment re being a chick and all and having to head bush!
Yep, there's just enough of a rise (watch where you squat because the grasses are typically VERY spiky!!) and you can see the dust cloud announcing oncoming vehicles a long time before they arrive!

I reckon my hubby would be laughing too much and I hope I don't ever have to prove myself right. I don't recall ever being confronted by anything other than my imagination...
I once had to sneak behind the car at Innamincka one night and he still accuses me of christening his tyres and marking my territory!

To any man out there (in EO land) who has a woman who lowers herself (pardon the pun!!) to answer the call in the wild...aren't you lucky you have such a great woman?!

Hi Dunc, remember to check any wood collected for little critters that may be taking shelter in there, lizards etc. Sorry, no pee stories!
