Just a quick note of advice for those planning to head to the Interior, the North and the Kimberley, very shortly.

You may have seen the news item about Darwin and some parts of the Territory getting heavy unseasonal rainfall, just a few days after the official start of the "Dry" season - but what the media has largely missed, is that the Kimberley has also had some substantial falls of rain at the same time - and more is forecast for this coming week.

Rainfalls recorded to 9:00M this morning (Wednesday 4th May) are as follows;

Timber Creek - 47mm
Flora Valley - 55mm
Gibb River - 56mm
Halls Creek - 29mm

The weather Bureau is forecasting that a broad trough containing a lot of tropical moisture is going to cover the Kimberley and extend into the NT from the start of next week - and further falls of 15 - 30mm are expected in many places, with the possibility of falls up to 100mm in some places.

So, this is just a heads-up to be aware that a lot of places in the North could become quite damp, and a few creeks could be on the rise, in the coming week or 10 days.

Between tomorrow and next Monday, there is also substantial rainfall predicted from an unrelated broad trough, in areas ranging from the Eastern Pilbara through the Interior, to Western and Central QLD.

Make sure you check the BOM weather forecast for any of these areas that you might be planning to camp or move into, or through, over this coming period, so you don't get any shocks!

This unseasonal rain follows on from what has been the driest Wet season for 11 years in the Kimberley.
I thought it was dreadfully dry from the 2014/2015 Wet season in the North, and I was disappointed at how much of the North looked very parched at the end of the previous Wet - but this last Wet just gone, was even drier.
As a result, the rain will no doubt be very welcome, even if it is unseasonal.

Synoptic chart

Cheers, Ron.

It certainly has been very dry here in the Top End with Darwin having one of it's hottest Wet seasons on record and second driest Wet season ever. Then a day after the beginning of the Dry Darwin had over 60mm of rain and has rained most days so far this month.
We were considering El Questro and the Gibb this June/July but wondering if there is going to be any water around at all out there and whether it is still worth going?
Maybe the Wet is the new Dry and the Dry the new Wet.

I saw the Mitchell Falls in 2013 and apparently there was a fair bit of rain in the weeks prior so they were in full flow and worth the effort. Maybe contact Drysdale River Station to see what their view is as scenic flights etc operate out of there and they would have the latest info. It's a bit of a mission getting up there so best to find out before.

Gidday
I have a friend who lives in Marble Bar (yeah, I know) where they have had one rain event this year, from the tail end of a cyclone in February. Not even any decent thunderstorms.
She reported this morning that there had been a few drops of rain overnight and they would really like some more in the next few days out of this system
Cheers

Lazylux

Marble Bar missed out but the BoM site says there
was a couple of inches just east at the Oakover River crossing on the Rippon Hills road and more further on at
Telfer.

Hope that doesn't mess up your plans

Cheers

Looking at the weather forecast for the weekend it would seem the whole of the inland can expect some serious rainfall.

Roads will certainly be closed which is OK as long as people are safe
but there could be quite a few roads become impassable and stranding could occur.

Hopefully the early nomads have on eye on the weather reports.

Were doing the Outback Way in about 5 weeks so it might provide some interesting days if the moisture is still around by then.

I leave on 22nd May for Broome. The plan is/was for Sydney to Broken Hill then up through the Flinders and along the Oodnadatta Track to Alice, then across the Tanami.
This rain might make that a little more interesting....

Just a little addition to this thread, to note that Mandora Station (near 80 Mile Beach) received 134mm up to 9:00AM this morning (Sat. 7th May).

It's also made the news that two blokes had to be rescued from their bogged 4WD about 15 kms from the Yulumbu Community, located in the Upper Fitzroy River, East of the Gibb River road, and NE of Fitzroy Crossing.

They set off an EPIRB that alerted authorities to their predicament, and a chopper has been sent out to them.
It's reported that their 4WD is currently unrecoverable due to floodwaters and poor road conditions - so it looks like it will be some time before they can get back to get it out.
