goldstream windup winch problem

I have a 2002 Goldstream storm and am having a problem with the winch, it winds up just fine, nice and smooth, but when winding down it is very jittery and jerky and not smooth at all. This happens all the time and all the way down. Anybody had similar problems, is it the clutch system on the winch maybe. Any help would be great

Can't help you with winch operation, but I suggest you ring or email the Service Manager at Goldstream for advice.

I had a problem with a bent bed runner (caused by us climbing on the bed to make it without installing the supports) and they asked what type (of two choices) it was.
When I clarified which one I required, the Service Manager advised the cost including delivery and how simple it was to replace myself.

Very happy with the Support from Goldstream.

I did ring Goldstream in Brisbane today and waiting for a reply, it still works but thought that I should get on top of the problem while at home and not away where it could possibly cost a lot more to fix or end a holiday.

I'm going to make a guess here, but maybe it (the winch) is loose. Had similar symptoms (which I recalled in hindsight...) before our winch fell apart. You need to raise the roof and remove the paneling to get at the winch to check the bolts or if you've got someone with a skinny arm, try reaching in the winding access hole and giving it a wriggle (only any good if they know what they're trying to feel for)

As for customer service, Goldstream paid for it to be fixed in Broome, then got me to bring it back to the factory to check it where they decided to replace the winch and also cleaned up the mess we had made cutting a hole in the side of the storage hatch to get at the winch to get it back together enough to be able to wind the roof up to get back to civilization (we were at Bell Gorge when it failed).

This reminds me... I should check those bolts again!

I have pulled all the covers off this arvo and tightened up all the bolts that hold the winch to the van and no difference so it is looking like the winch clutch set maybe. Time to call in the mobile repair dude I think.

Mine 'worked' for the rest of our trip but wasn't smooth like it was initially. The guys at the factory reckoned it was bent which is why they replaced it. Maybe yours has bent it enough to stop it winding smoothly. Alternatively, maybe there's something wrong with the cables.
