Howdy, I've got 235/85s on my hilux and asked my local mechanic to order me a second spare but he's given me a 245/70. This is suitable is it??

Cat, G'day, no, you asked for a 235/85, not a 245/70. If you have a look at the following information you will see there is a marked difference in size. Take it back and get the 235/85.
I presumed the rims are 16"???
The information can be found here on ExplorOz in the articles, Tyre Size Comparison.

Results for tyre 235 / 85 R 16

When your speedo reads 100km/hr you're actually at 92.46km/hr

The fact we don't know is, are the 235/85R(16?)s the original tyres? So, will the speedo give an inaccurate reading with the 245/70s? We also don't know the model/year of the Hilux. I seem to recall most models coming out with 205R16, with the exception of mags.

But yes if one asks for 235/85s then that's what one should get I suppose.

1st thing to do is read the toyota IDPlate that will tell ya the year an month of manufacture
Then read the tyre placard for your vehicle normally around the front door opening or glove box it will tell you what the vehicle should have on it

" are the 235/85R(16?)s the original tyres?"
No Hilux ever had a 235/85 x 16. They are even larger than the 7.50 x 16 used on Landcruisers.

You are right with the 205. A street 205R16C and an off road 205R16LT was standard for many years along with a wide 15 inch. All are around 735 mm diameter. Prior to that they had a 7.00 x16. Not sure what the current ones have.

Cat L.

Go back and get a 235/85 to match your others. Don't forget to check the load rating before you accept it. That size comes in two or three different ratings.
