Hi all,
A colleague of mine is doing a trip, part of it involves NT to Cape Trib. They want to do Katherine to Cairns. They are driving a Mitsubishi van 2wd.
I advised its not advisable but I have yet to go myself and reports on the web are a mixed bag.
Those that have been, would late mid-late Oct be OK to go through with a 2wd? Seems a pretty dry month. Or would the roads still be shitty from a whole peak season of people using them.
Thanks

Going by the dry (wet) season we are having at the moment anything is possible.
Plenty of 2wd vehicles make the run and the roads are closed anyway when they are wet.
If you get caught 1/2 way in the wet there would be fun and games.

"Mitsubishi van" as in Express/Starwagon/etc? Having previously owned both these versions there is one big caveat - having enough load over the rear wheels to maintain traction when thing get loose uphill, or slippery on the level.

Haven't been down that track yet but there are tracks in the area I have been on where the bull dust will swallow some vehicles and there can be hidden holes under it not good for low clearance vehicles. Planning is the key carrying enough food, water and not going places where you shouldn't or travel beyond your means or your vehicles. Some people do that regardless and just expect other travellers will go out of their way to help. Personally I don't see the sense in flogging a vehicle that is built for the road on off rd tracks it's all fun till something breaks and then the mood changes and so does your bank account.
