Baz - The Landy
The air is cooling as you stand outside your favourite Pub, your chosen beverage quenching your thirst…
The sun is sliding towards a western horizon, perhaps casting a golden hue over a parched and barren landscape. Or maybe there are palm trees swaying to the rhythm of the ocean’s rise and fall – and as you tip your hat to another day of travel through the best country in the world, Australia…
Which pub are you at and why?
Good weekend to all, Baz – The Landy (Cheers)
Ps: Feel free to drink whatever takes your fancy, but given it is Friday, I'll have a Schooner of whatever is cold - and this is where I'm having mine, it has always been a friendly place to quench your thirst...!

Hey Baz, have you tried riding the bike at that pub?
If you can ride it to the other side of the road, I'll buy your beers for the rest of the night! lol

We don't frequent any pubs as we are not really drinkers. Lost the habit when we couldn't afford it for the first 18 years of our married life. That's right and some people complain about the cost of living today. HAH!!
But I will say that I enjoyed the night at
Daly Waters Pub. And we had a few squashes. The company was great and the Aussies won the
test!!!

Gday Phil
Back in the old days on Saturday night, the Daily Waters policeman would take the
young fellas out the back for a hair cut.

I've given pubs a fair try. Helps to have grog inside you to find anything attractive about the average one, its decor, food or conversation. As I don't drink anymore (health, not principles) I don't bother with pubs.

Phil, I would have to agree with you on this one.
I don't drink either after about 20 years of trying to drown myself in the stuff, but the most enjoyable night I think I ever had was chewing a great steak, sipping a coke and listening to the comedy at the
Daly Waters pub.
Cheers

Well I would like to be back at the
Kingoonya pub. Muzza serving beers and lots to do in town.
-Fill up with Diesel
-cross the road and
camp with provided firewood.
-Watch those massive trains go by.
-watch the sunset
-Think about
Tarcoola and one of the best drives in Australia - due west for a few hundred km.

Baz,
Barry Caves Roadhouse was about 95kms east of where the
Barkly Homestead is now. Was run by a character called Fred, can't recall his surname, who had a wooden leg and was a bit of a raconteur.
He, along with his establishment, gained some fame, or notoriety(depending how you like dogs) when he put in a plea for emergency food, during the 1974 floods. He claimed to the media, that they would have to eat their dogs to survive. Whether they did or not is open to conjecture?
Barry Caves, along with Frewena Roadhouse, were closed down when
Barkly Homestead was opened. All that remains at both these sites is a
parking bay. The one at
Barry Caves is usually full of water, after the recent rains we've had.

We had breaky at
Barry Caves on the way to
Darwin from Mt Isa in 1982. Best mixed grill ever. Also had lunch at Freweena on the same day. Sadly both these were replaced by the Barkly roadhouse some years later.

I'm another one for
Nindigully!
A coldie on the verandah.
And the one on the corner in
Winton (Tattersal's?)
You don't have to drink!
Pop in and have a meal. Share your travellers' dollars around. Learn from the locals. Join them watching a footy game on the big screen in front of an open fire. Look at the paraphernalia on the walls or the historical photos. Marvel at the skills of the chef in remote
places where groceries aren't sourced from the local Woolworths around the corner (eg
Birdsville!) Contribute to the local charity tins on the counter. Buy some raffle tickets. Run into an old friend (who hasn't run into an old friend (or friend of a friend!) in a remote pub?!)
:) Robyn

Been to
Nindigully a few times over the years, always been a great pub I thought up until our last visit there. The food was very ordinary, and the staff were barely interested in serving us, they seemed more interested in socialising with other staff and friends that were there.
I believe the misses mentioned to me a week or so ago that ithe pub is currently up for sale...hopefully it'll return to being a great pub to visit again, because going on our last visit I'm in no hurry to head back there.

Have to agree with the Tatts in
Winton, great food and atmosphere.
Nindigully is very hit and miss, a bit like
Birdsville.
Good food as long as you don't order a steak.
Both have great atmosphere, if only they could get & keep good staff.

About 15 years ago I pulled up at the
Prairie hotel and the publican was in full flight. He was pissed as, and playing cowboys with a water pistol. Gave all of us a laugh.

Fred Brophy?
As in "the" Fred Brophy of boxing tent fame?
Limped into Prairie after almost getting stuck in the wet black soil on the Muttaburra/Prairie Rd a few years ago. We love going through Hughendon for the FJ Holden cafe's burgers so we'll try the Prairie Pub too if we can. The publican sounds like the entertainment specialty!!
We had good meals at the pub in
Windorah too...like
Birdsville, another pub where you admire the quality of meals considering their "nearest" supermarket.

Just had a few Guinness' at the Pig and Whistle, a great little English alehouse near Arthur's
Seat on the Mornington peninsular in Victoria.
Why? Because it has far more atmosphere than the freshly renovated and a bit ritzy Flinders Hotel...

The Exchange Hotel in
Muttaburra on a Friday night is good for a decent feed and a few amber liquids , be aware of the 'karaoke' if Phil & Shona fire it up especially if Fiona & Winky start to sing ……..

I am not a pub person either but a drink in the bar and a meal at the
Middleton pub was an interesting experience. We shared a table with a couple on their way to
Camooweal to help prepare for the Drovers Festival. Lisencee Lester Cain entertained us all evening with tales of horses, droving and the old days.
Did similar at
Kingoonya a bit later in the trip. Interesting experiences that add to the joys of travel.
Cheers, Kevin

Another vote for the tatts in
winton. What about the pub at
duchess or the eurandangi pub (re named the dangi bush resort). The
pinnacle hotel with the best pies or the
Yaraka pub for me best hospitality and the bus to the top of the
hill each new get to watch the sunset.
