We are planning in December to go from Tom Groggin to Omeo over the Davies Plain Track. Then return on the western loop via Mt Pinnibar.
Providing we have fine weather, we were planning 2 nights to Omeo then 3 nights return.
We love unrushed trips and camping in the wild stuff so is this realistically doable for a couple of pensioners :)

Cheers

Thanks Carl, I've seen km's, maps, topo's etc and have a fully tricked up 4WD but the wife is into photography and I was wondering how long it would take stopping and having a good look around at what appears to be a beautiful place.
Sorry, I should have been more descriptive.

Thanks again;

Cheers

We did Tom Groggin to Omeo via Davies Plain easily in a day, even had to stop to help a motor bike rider who came off and broke some bones. We gave him a lift to Davies Plain Hut and waited with him for a rescue chopper. It probably added two hours interruption to the day. You can smell every flower on the way if you allow two nights. :-)

Thanks Muz, I'm thinking of MT MTZ patches on the Walker Legs ;)

Love your Blue Rag photo, Xmas at the Rag!
We were there last November and spotted a LC with a roof top camper on that little flat spot near the edge to the SE of the Geo-marker. A bloody exposed spot to have a spinnaker up.

Keep your fire going mate

George M took that photo. We might go there again this Christmas . We are just gluttons for punishment.

If you like camping in the wild stuff then I'd recommend overnighting at the bottom of the Kings Plain Tk.

It is right on the Murray River and well away from the traffic you'll experience on the Davies Plain Tk. Turn left when you get to the bottom...

Each track you mention can be done easily in a day.

Hi Dad,
This is a great 4wd trip, we do it every Easter and never tire of it, it can be done both ways in a day. Camp sites along the way are at Buckwong Creek Crossing, King Plain on the Murray, Davies Plain Hut, Charlies Creek, Buckwong Hut, or if you take a left (down McAllisters Trk) after Charlies Creek you end up on the Murray again. On the way back probably the best camp site is at Wheelers Creek hut.

If it rains don't move until the tracks dry out as there are some really scary bits that are treacherous even with wheel chains and diff locks. The final decent to Dogman's hut behind Tom Groggin is almost impossible after rain.

BTW Mt Pinnibar was first surveyed in 1955 by Harry Judge as part of the Snowy scheme preparations, he rode up from Dogman's Hut with two assistants.

Thanks Gaz, yeah, the red clay of about 500m when wet leaving or coming down to Tom Groggin was advised a no go. If need be it would be a backtrack if the weather doesn't smile.

Thanks for the info re camps

Cheers
