I have a 98 Tdi manual set up for expedition type touring (OX winch, Konis, King Springs, Engel, etc, etc). Replaced my original Michelins at 40,000km as they were pretty well shot. Ok round town but couldn't hack the gibber roads. Did a lot of research as to available options and also the cost involved. Finally settled on BFG 225/75 AT KOs due to the increased load rating. Also, replacement Michelins were around $280 ea whereas the BFGs were $210 ea. Now have 60,000 on the BFGs and have given them a fair work out (
Cape York, Simpson etc) with an all up weight of around 2,900kg on the big trips. I have the usual range of tread chips and small cuts/splits etc (not surprising in terms of where I have been). They are an excellent value tyre and great on and off road. My
GPS and highway radar confirms that there are no speedo worries: my speedo says 100k/ph and the radar/
gps says 97 kph. I run the BFGs at 36psi all round when unloaded.
Cheers
Steve
