Anyone with these engines notice a funny thumping sound when under load a bit over idle?, My wifes aurion seems to make a funny noise when loaded up ,just wondering if anyone has had the same thing, the vehicle has been faultless otherwise.

Cheers Axle.

You may find that the engine mounts on the late Toyota passenger cars are very soft ...... and they will try to pull at very low rpm ... resulting in a pumping just above stall.

So is it a slow thump, a single thump or a fast thumping/rattling noise?

Its consistent with engine revs, sounds a little like piston slap , but on cold start up its fine??, have been told the variable valve timing set up can make a noise

I know Honda have a problem with the accord in that area.

Will just see if it develops into something worse before going to the toyo Doc.

Cheers.

If it was an older vehicle I'd say main bearings. Very common years ago at low revs under load.

You may find it to be exhaust flow harmonics which are likely to be noticed when load is applied and before the engine is running faster.

Sort of like a 2 stroke bike exhaust noise just above idle.

one of the issues with these variable valve timimng engines is that they continue tom pull and very low RPM....... when they do stall out it is very sudden.

When these engines are on the verge of stalling they can make all sorts of strange noises as the electronics tries to make sense of what is going on and the timmimg hunts.

cheers

Is the noise when first starting up or all the time when just over idle?

Its not all the time and good on start up, when you put it in gear(automatic) is when you hear it, seems to be in a certain rev range loaded up .can't hear anything driving along. I'm starting to think RMD might be on the money.

Cheers.

Ok then, the clunk I'm referring to which I have had in my last 2 Aurions is when you start it up and in the first 10-20m there is a clunk which I've been told is the VSC doing a self test; your issue sounds different though
